Roundup: Newark Catholic football blanks Bishop Rosecrans in OHSAA playoff win

The Newark Catholic football team scored four first-quarter touchdowns, jumping on visiting Bishop Rosecrans (3-8) early in a 49-0 victory in a Division VII, Region 27 first-round game.

Miller Hutchison opened the with scoring passes to Grant Moore and Owen Helms, and Brenden Sheehan and Mikey Hess each followed with TD runs. Sheehan added a pair of TD runs in the second quarter, and Hutchison finished scoring with another connection to Moore for the Green Wave, who led 49-0 at halftime.

No. 1 NC hosts No. 9 Portsmouth Notre Dame at 7 p.m. next Friday. Notre Dame beat Franklin Furnace Green 45-36.

Heath falls on road

Eli Jones threw for 165 yards and ran for 93, accounting for five total touchdowns as No. 5 Wheelersburg sent visiting Heath to a 59-0 defeat in a Division V, Region 19 first-round game.

Brayden Bayles finished with 97 yards passing and 75 yards rushing for the Bulldogs (6-5). Grayson Shumate made three catches for 30 yards, and Connor Corbett added 41 yards rushing and 24 yards receiving.

Creed Warren, Eric Lattimore and Caleb Arthur each caught TD passes from Jones for the Pirates (8-3).

Heights loses to Hoover

Michael Landry's 63-yard touchdown pass to Jake Lopinto in the third quarter accounted for Licking Heights' only score in a 38-7 loss at No. 6 North Canton Hoover in a Division II, Region 7 first-round game.

Landry threw for 203 yards for the Hornets (5-6). Lopinto caught three passes for 89 yards, Jonah Hane three for 51 and Josiah Ayers four for 38.

Four different Vikings (8-3) scored on touchdown runs in the first half. Carson Dyrlund added his second TD run in the fourth quarter.
