Roundup: Newark Catholic's Luft fires 66 in OHSAA sectional boys golf
Brian Luft opened the Division III postseason in eye-opening fashion Tuesday.
The Newark Catholic junior shot a school-record 66 at Darby Creek, taking medalist honors and leading the Green Wave to a school-record 299 and the team championship during the Division III sectional tournament. NC advances to next week's district tournament at Turnberry.
Luft recorded six birdies during his bogey-free round of 6-under par. Teammates Brogan Sullivan at 74, Max Vanoy 75 and Nathan Riggleman 84 followed for the Green Wave, who finished 22 strokes ahead of Mechanicsburg.
Bruning wins sectional
Johnstown senior Clay Bruning fired a 70 at Denison Golf Club to take medalist honors during the Division II sectional tournament.
Bruning shot 32 on the back nine, including an eagle on the Par-5 No. 10. Bruning will be joined in next week's district tournament at Turnberry by teammate Evan Harper, Utica's Ben Rodichok and the Heath team.
Rodichok shot 75, and Harper 84 to take the final two qualifying spots for individuals. David Link led the third-place Bulldogs with 77, and he was followed by Riley Baum at 82, Keenan Kelly 84 and Hunter Byers 85.
VOLLEYBALL
NC cruises
Kylie Gibson totaled 25 assists, 10 digs and two aces for Newark Catholic in a sweep of host Lakewood, 25-8, 25-15, 25-16, in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.
Ava Gummer added nine kills, Sophie Peloquin seven kills and three blocks, Erin Keck six kills and Ava Heffley 12 digs for the first-place Green Wave (15-2, 11-0).
Aubrey Howell had six kills and two aces, Charlee Palmer four kills and eight digs and Kenna Parkison 21 assists for the Lancers (3-12, 1-9).
Heath sweeps
Sydney Chapman totaled 11 kills and six aces, powering Heath to a victory, 25-12, 27-25, 25-23, at Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.
Logan Johnston added 10 kills, Hanna Clark nine kills and three blocks, Ysa Barcelona 20 assists and Caroline Robertson 16 digs for the Bulldogs (9-5, 7-3).
Sara Roser had eight kills and Maddie VanScoy and Darla Dorman five kills apiece for the Vikings (5-12, 3-8).
Watkins beats Valley
McKayla Jellison stuffed the stat sheet with 11 kills, five aces and three blocks, leading Watkins Memorial to a victory, 25-19, 25-17, 25-13, at Licking Valley in LCL-Buckeye play.
Jamisen Justice and Murphy Boyd added nine kills apiece, Elise Adelman 30 assists and Mya Jackson 13 digs for the first-place Warriors (13-4, 9-1).
Makala Bennett had seven kills, Rylee Sensabaugh three blocks and Daizi Hardbarger 10 digs for the Panthers (4-12, 3-7).
Johnstown wins
Kylie Sharp recorded 15 kills and two blocks for Johnstown in a victory against visiting Utica, 25-16, 25-11, 25-16, in LCL-Cardinal play.
Jenna Ashbrooke added six kills, six assists and 11 digs and Avery Duey four aces and seven digs for the Johnnies (11-3, 8-2).
Abby Buchanan had five kills, Ellie Boggs four blocks and Alexa Gosnell eight assists and 10 digs for Utica (5-11, 3-7).
Newark falls on road
Newark dropped a match at Pickerington Central (11-4, 6-0), 25-5, 25-14, 25-10, in a battle of the top two teams in the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division.
Bella Martinez had four kills, Carlee Thompson 10 assists and Unique Miller three aces for the Wildcats (11-6, 4-2).
GIRLS SOCCER
Watkins edges Darby
Lindsey Castillo picked up a goal and an assist for Watkins Memorial in a 2-1 victory at Hilliard Darby.
Jaylyn Thornton also scored, and Kenzey Jones-Barrera added an assist. Rilyn Warner made three saves for the Warriors (8-2-1).
Heath falls at Hartley
Allie Dunlap scored off a Brielle Keck assist for Heath in a 4-1 loss at Bishop Hartley.
Hailey Cash made seven saves for the Bulldogs (7-4-1).
Granville nipped
Sydney Lauffer made three saves for Granville (10-1) in a 1-0 loss at Upper Arlington in a battle of state powers.
Heights cruises
Savanna Cronin had a hat trick in Licking Heights' 10-0 victory at Groveport (0-8).
Emma French added two goals and Evelyn Caruso, Sophie Queen, Addison Caudill, Kaylyn Hopf and Sydney Kingery one each for the Hornets (4-5). Ellie Wright made two saves.

Watkins nips Big Walnut
Nic Sarver's six saves made one goal stand up in Watkins Memorial's 1-0 victory at Big Walnut.
Ryland Owens scored off Brayden Logue's assist for the Warriors (7-3-1) midway through the second half.
Heights shuts out Groveport
Zack Wagenbrenner’s first-half hat trick sent Licking Heights to a 3-0 victory against visiting Groveport (1-7-1).
Ibrahim Abdu and Luka Stojcev had an assist apiece, and Chris Anderson made four saves for the Hornets (3-3).
Liberty beats Northside
Ethan Gohn made eight saves for Liberty Christian in a 3-1 victory against visiting Northside Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.
Brennan Fox, Josh Onabanjo and Jacob Elkins each scored for the Eagles (7-2-1, 2-0), and Caleb Reichert added an assist.
Heath wins
Kam Holmberg made 14 saves for Heath in a 9-0 victory against visiting Linden-McKinley.
Landon Montgomery totaled four goals, Tyler Hudson three and Lane Grady two for the Bulldogs (5-6).
Johnstown ties
Calvin Hurt kept Bloom-Carroll off the board late, securing Johnstown's 1-1 tie with the Bulldogs at home.
Keaton Cornutte scored off an assist from Braden Gibson for the Johnnies (4-5-1).
Lakewood blanks New Lex
Weston Debevoise recorded 16 saves on Monday, preserving Lakewood's 3-0 victory at New Lexington.
Kyle Frye had a goal and an assist, Luke Pierce and Chuck Chen a goal apiece and Yael Fabra-Hoyos an assist for the Lancers (5-5).
GIRLS TENNIS
Newark falls
Dia Bailey and Lacey Layne rallied for a three-set victory, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles for Newark (10-9) in a 4-1 loss at Bloom-Carroll.
CROSS COUNTRY
Baker places in top 10
Utica's Camryn Baker raced to a 10th-place finish (20:09.40), leading Licking County finishers during Fredericktown's Denny Stevens Invitational.
Following Baker were the Northridge foursome of Cheyann Severance 34th (21:25.52), Albree Ashbrook 36th (21:33.68), Sarah Koker 45th (21:57.48) and Dixie Ashbrook 46th (21:57.63). Next were Utica's Stella Bowman 48th (21:59.69), Northridge's Annabeth Hilton 52nd (22:11.31) and Heath's Ally Stephens 60th (22:29.70).
In the boys race, Northridge's Braden Yutzy placed eighth (16:35.24). Heath's Tucker See 22nd (17:13.70) and Jacob Elam 23rd (17:15.34), the Utica foursome of Stephen Epps 28th (17:33.77), Hayden Quinif 42nd (17:57.58), Anthony Unger 46th (18:01.82) and Jordan Taylor 51st (18:09.12) and Northridge's Logan Knerr 54th (18:12.20).
