Roundup: Newark wrestling pins Groveport

The Newark wrestling team won all six contested matches Thursday, beating host Groveport 57-18 in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division action.

Winning by pin were Isaiah McCaa (113), Jibreel Smith (126), Rhys Fairall (150), Jared Sherrard (165) and Reese Redman (215). Jared Hawk (Hwt.)won by decision.

GCA rallies at Northside

Granville Christian defended a final shot from Northside Christian to escape with a 53-52 road victory in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Brendon Austin caught fire, hitting five 3-pointers for 15 points to lead the Lions (10-6, 5-4), who outscored the hosts 17-10 in the fourth quarter. Joe Benvie scored six of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, and Andrew Benvie added 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

GCA wins on road

A 15-2 edge in the second quarter allowed Granville Christian to take control in a 38-21 victory at Northside Christian in MOCAL play.

Hannah Hubbard totaled 19 points, hitting a trio of 3-pointers for the Lions (12-6, 8-2). Darynne Zellar scored seven of her 10 points in that second-quarter surge.

SWIMMING

Swickard wins twice

Halen Swickard won the 100 butterfly (1:32.96) and 100 backstroke (1:31.97) on Wednesday to lead Newark during a dual at Oakstone Academy.

Adding individual wins for the Wildcats were Maryn Hatfield in the 50 freestyle (30.66) and Lauren Chadock 100 free (1:20.33).

In the boys meet, six Wildcats won an individual race.

Ben Hammond won the 200 free (2:48.69), Mason Boyd 100 fly (1:36.87), Will Chiacchira 100 free (1:12.42), R.J. Sands 400 free (6:11.06), Leyton Ricketts 100 back (1:26.36) and Andrew Schweiger 100 breaststroke (1:29.86).
