Roundup: Newark wrestling wins Utica Invitational

The Newark wrestling team dominated the upper weights Saturday, winning three consecutive titles and won four classes overall to claim the championship during the Utica Invitational.

Nicholas Harrell (113) pinned all five of his opponents, beating North Union's Kannon Alvarado in the final, and James Daughtery (165) also pinned all five of his opponents, beating Olentangy Berlin's Liam Doneyhue in the final for the Wildcats, who totaled 189 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Utica's 165.5.

Also winning for Newark, Kallan Baker (175) finished 4-0 with two pins, beating Barnesville's Robby Nixon 16-1 in the final, and Reece Redman (190) also finished 4-0 with two pins, beating Fredericktown's Mason Hoeflich 6-0 in the final.

Utica's Breyden Hill (126) finished 5-0 with three pins, beating Independence's Alex Mickens 7-4 in the final, and Clayton Smith (150) pinned all five of his opponents, beating Wooster's Dylan Hudson in the final.

Johnstown's Hayden Wood (157) finished 4-1 and took runner-up. Utica's Anthony Unger (106) and Nick Drumm (138), Newark's Ray Taylor (126), Heath's Jakhi Royster (144), Licking Valley's Adam Terry (175) and Johnstown's Derrick Grigsby (190) each placed third.

Costa, Fister take second

Granville's Peyton Costa (113) went 4-1 with three pins and Northridge's Michael Fister (138) 4-1 with two pins as each took runner-up during New Lexington's Jimmy Wood Invitational.

Granville's Andy Sanchez (126), Northridge's Treven Angus (132) and Licking Valley's Bryce Justice (190) each placed third. Valley's Noah Curry (113) and Theo Walsh (215), Northridge's Haedyn Parman (120) and Granville's Logan McFaralnd (138) and A.J. Jones (157) each placed fourth.

Sheehan takes runner-up

Brendan Sheehan (165) finished 4-1 with two pins to take second for Newark Catholic during Lima Central Catholic's Thunderbird Invitational.

Sheehan beat Woodmore's Jack Caldwell 10-1 in the semifinals before falling by pin to Kansas Lakota's Braxton Quaintance by third-period pin in the final.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NC drops Lakewood

Kylie Gibson racked up 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Newark Catholic in a 50-39 victory against visiting Lakewood in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Fini Kaiser added 10 points and 10 rebounds and Madison Hampton nine points for the Green Wave (14-3, 10-3), who remain in a first-place tie with Heath.

Grace Sturgell and Jaylie Maas led the Lancers (5-13, 2-11) with nine points apiece.

Heath edges Northridge

Taliyah Holmes totaled 17 points, going 10-for-14 from foul line to lead Heath to a 54-43 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

Caroline Robertson added eight points and A'mya Royster and Hannah Cash seven apiece for the Bulldogs (14-5, 10-3), who remained tied with Newark Catholic for first place.

Ava Travis led the Vikings (6-12, 4-9) with 16 points. Naia Moore added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Reese Callan 10 points.

Granville wins

Granville hit six 3-pointers in a 27-point first quarter, racing to a 61-19 victory against visiting Licking Heights in LCL-Buckeye play.

Aliyah Moore totaled 20 points, hitting five 3s, for the Blue Aces (17-1, 12-0). Ava Gossman added 19 points and Harper Annarino 13.

Amya Thompson led the Hornets (3-15, 1-11) with nine points.

Johnstown beats Utica

Abigail Adkins scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the third quarter, lifting host Johnstown to a 41-32 victory against visiting Utica in LCL-Cardinal play.

Adkins added 10 rebounds and Kylie Sharp 12 points and three steals and Lauren Baughman seven rebounds for the Johnnies (11-7, 9-4).

Abby Dickson led Utica (7-12, 3-10) with 15 points. Delaney Kerstetter added eight.

Watkins wins at Valley

Kalleigh Rennie stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, nine steals, eight assists and five rebounds for Watkins Memorial in a 58-39 victory at Licking Valley in LCL-Buckeye play.

Cameryn Wheeler added 17 points and Ella Perry and Rilyn Warner apiece for the Warriors (14-6, 9-4).

Avery Williams led the Panthers (4-14, 3-9) with 13 points. Rylee Hillis added 11 and Emma Cubbison 10, combining to hit five 3-pointers.

GCA falls at home

Granville Christian was held to eight points in the second half of a 54-30 loss to visiting Genoa Christian.

Ella Rhoads led the Lions (9-8) with 13 points, and Brianna Hubbard added eight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GCA beats Genoa

Granville Christian won each quarter, steadily pulling away from visiting Genoa Christian for a 49-34 victory.

Andrew Benvie led a balanced attack with 13 points. Eli Cooper and Gabe Perez, who hit a trio of 3-pointers, added 12 points apiece and Bentley Johnson eight for the Lions (5-11).
