Newbury Park man killed in Highway 23 crash

THOUSAND OAKS — A 61-year-old Newbury Park man died after his car went off the side of Highway 23 in Thousand Oaks Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. on southbound Highway 23 where it crosses over Paige Lane. The site is near the southern end of Conejo Creek Park South.

The driver was traveling southbound in a 2021 Subaru SUV when, for reasons under investigation, his car went into the dirt center median and hit a guardrail, continuing in the dirt to a steep drop-off at Paige Lane, CHP officials said. The Subaru became airborne, landing on a bike path under the highway on Paige.

After hitting the bike path, the vehicle became airborne again, flipping end-over-end. It came to rest on its wheels on the south shoulder of Paige Lane. The driver, who was alone in the Subaru, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. His name had not been released by the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office as of Tuesday evening.

The incident closed Paige Lane for about two-and-a-half hours but did not impact southbound 23 traffic, officials said.

The investigation remains ongoing by the CHP's Moorpark-area office. Anyone with information can reach investigators at 805-553-0800.
