Bailey Peterson was hitless in her first three at-bats against Valley Oak League opponent Kimball.

But she did not let that bother her as she stepped into the batter’s box in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs and a runner on second base.

“In my head, I was thinking I was 0-for-3, but I had solid hits all day, they were just right to people,” Peterson said. “I knew that if I just made good contact and scored the runner at second then we’d be fine.”

Peterson promptly ended the matchup between two of the section’s top 25 teams with one swing, doubling to left center field, scoring sophomore Madison Bohannon, who singled and stole second to give the Mustangs a 5-4 extra innings victory. With the win, Oakdale remains in second place in the league standings with one week left in the regular season.

“I was nervous, but pressure is a privilege,” she said. “I knew that my coaches and my teammates gave me the ability to overcome that.

“The energy that we had, the fight we put up, it was all around just a fun game and I think that’s what softball is all about.”

The Mustangs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jayci Volonte got the offense started with a leadoff triple and Briley Everett singled on a bunt in the next at bat. With two outs, Morgan Wright drove in two runs with a single and Reagan Everett drove in a run with a single.

Kimball responded with two runs in the top of the third and plated one in the top of the fifth. In a back and forth affair, Oakdale responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth to open back up a one-run lead. In the top of the sixth inning, freshman Iolana Faasisila singled to right field for Kimball, driving in the tying run. The game remained tied until Peterson’s game-winning extra base hit in the bottom of the eighth.

Delainey got the start and Raegan came on in relief as the Everett sisters combined for 11 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Mustangs were happy to return back home after playing their last eight games on the road. They went 5-3 overall during that span and won three-of-four league games.

The one loss came at the hands of league rival Central Catholic, who they face again in their final game of the season May 10.

“Softball is really big here at Oakdale … so it just feels really good to be at home with all the support of our fans.”

The Mustangs travel to East Union to make up Tuesday’s rain out and will host Sierra Tuesday before Wednesday’s big matchup with the current VOL leaders, Central Catholic.
