Roundup: Penick hits Licking Valley softball past Licking Heights

Taylor Penick hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning Thursday, powering the Licking Valley softball team to a 3-2 victory at Licking Heights in Licking County League-Buckeye Division play.

Penick had two of the five hits for the Panthers (7-5, 3-4), and Rylie Dunlap, Addison Justice and Sylvie Devore added a hit apiece and Liz Korns a run scored. Abbe McNabb struck out five.

Syd Stout and Kaylyn Hopf had two hits and a run scored apiece for the Hornets (9-7, 3-6), and Ava VonBargen added a hit and an RBI. Lydia Rauch struck out four and allowed two earned runs.

Johnstown falls

Macy Walters struck out 13 for Johnstown, but a three-run home run for Indian Valley’s Mia Rose helped send the Johnnies to a 4-0 defeat at the Wendy’s Classic in Ashland.

Addie Triplett, Laney Zak and Peyton Mischel singled for the Johnnies (11-2), who struck out 13 times against Rose.

BASEBALL

Valley beats Heights

Theo Walsh homered and doubled twice, racking up four RBIs for Licking Valley in a 9-2 victory at Licking Heights in LCL-Buckeye play.

Gunner Bowman added a hit and an RBI, Wyatt Binckley a hit and a run scored and Hayden Rodgers two runs scored for the Panthers (8-2, 7-1), who host first-place Watkins Memorial on Monday. Colby Conn struck out six in six five-hit innings.

Jake Lopinto hit a solo home run and a triple to lead the Hornets (5-7, 3-5). Tyler Lopinto added a hit and an RBI, and Grant Caldwell allowed one hit and no earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Newark rolls

Austin Rose totaled two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs for Newark in a 13-3 victory against visiting Westerville North.

Max Durbin added two hits and three runs scored, Bodie Smith two hits, a run scored and two RBIs and Jayce Dansby a hit and three RBIs for the Wildcats (9-3-1). Kyle Driskel struck out two in five three-hit innings.

Liberty wins

Mason Kamppi tripled and doubled as a part of a three-hit day that included four runs scored and three RBIs for Liberty Christian in a 20-1 victory at Northside Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Jackson Cecil added two hits, three runs scored and two RBIs, Devon Fye a hit, three runs scored and three RBIs and Jack Chabot two hits and three runs scored for the Eagles (4-3, 4-1).

Granville nipped

A late rally went for naught as Granville fell 8-7 at Mount Vernon.

Ezra Kurek led the Blue Aces (7-7) with a double and a single and three runs scored. Aaron Gutridge added two hits, a run scored and two RBIs, Jakob Culver two hits, a run scored and an RBI and Colby Rardon an RBI double and a run scored off the bench in a four-run seventh inning.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Granville stays hot

Gabrielle Graves’ hat trick helped Granville wins its third match in as many nights, 14-4 against visiting Olentangy Orange.

Amelia Sarap had six goals, Kyra Studer two and an assist, Zoe Gravitt two and Edi Fisher one and an assist for the Blue Aces (7-1). Bella Rockwell added two assists and three forced turnovers, Maddy Kurek nine draw controls and Grace Lilly two saves.

BOYS TENNIS

Newark wins at home

Evan Devries won a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0, at No. 1 singles to wrap up Newark’s 4-1 victory against visiting Groveport in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Will Woughter at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0, also won in singles, and Nick Strauch and Trever Anderson, 6-0, 6-0, and Tim Fitterer and Layton Shaner, 6-1, 6-1, won doubles matches for the Wildcats (6-5, 3-1).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Newark falls

Kahne Pastorius’ four kills and three blocks led Newark in a loss to New Albany, 25-15, 25-20, 25-13.

Miles Drake added an ace, three assists and three digs and Landon Caw an assist and four digs for the Wildcats (1-13).
