Roundup: Reynolds softball team tops UC; Hickory baseball still unbeaten

May 10—SOFTBALL

— Reynolds 10, Union City 8 — At Union City, Chloe McLaughlin drove in three runs as the Region 1 Raiders posted an impressive win over Region 2 Union City.

Reynolds took an early 4-0 lead Monday, but Union City plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. The Raiders tacked on four more runs in the sixth frame and two in the seventh inning. UC scored its final three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Mackenzie Herman had three hits and drove in two runs for Reynolds (10-1) and Kylie McAdoo and Rylee Gearthart collected two hits each.

Herman (4 2/3 innings) and Halyn Cawthorne pitched for Reynolds. Herman collected five strikeouts while Cawthorne fanned three batters.

Desirae Brown drove in two runs for the Bears (9-2) and Abby Tingley struck out six in a complete-game performance. She is the reigning District 10 Player of the Year (Erie Times-News).

Last spring, Union City was 19-0 before Sharpsville's Breanna Hanley fired a three-hit shutout in the District 10 Class 2A championship game. UC finished the season with a 21-2 record after losing to Ligonier Valley in the PIAA semifinals. Ligonier Valley beat Sharpsville in the opening round of the state playoffs.

— Hickory 14, Oil City 3 (6 inn.) — At Oil City, Kaelyn Fustos and Ava Houy each had three hits and three RBIs and Lydia Hallas collected two hits and drove in four runs to power the Hornets past the Oilers in the Region 4 contest.

Fustos had a triple and Houy doubled in the 20-hit attack. Kendra Koerth homered, doubled, and drove in two runs for Hickory, Loren Myers tripled and ripped two singles, Hallie Miller collected a pair of singles and an RBI, and Madeline Myers and Kaitlyn Gilliland each singled twice.

Lydia Hallas shined on the mound for the Hornets by tossing a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk.

Nyssa Hanlon (three innings) and Shalyn Whittemore pitched for Oil City. They fanned four, walked one, and gave up 20 hits.

Libbie Arnink led the Oilers at the plate with a home run, single, and three RBIs.

— Sharon 9, West Middlesex 8 (8 inn.) — At West Middlesex, Kurtasia Chester led off the eighth inning with a bunt single, moved to second on Jersey Tracy's sacrifice, and was driven in on an RBI single by Miranda Metro as the Region 4 Tigers held on for the win over the Region 1 Reds.

Metro faced runners on first and second base with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but escaped with a line out to left field and a strikeout to end the game. Metro struck out six batters, walked six, and gave up 12 hits in the complete-game performance.

Lexi Berkson had two singles and two RBIs for Sharon, Metro contributed a pair of singles and an RBI, Dalaina Bayer doubled and drove in a pair of runs, and Katie Lapikas singled and had an RBI.

Kylee Long went the distance on the mound for WM. She struck out eight, walked four, and gave up four earned runs on nine hits.

At the plate for WM, Emily Dick had three singles and an RBI, Alaina Bowers ripped two singles, Ava Gilmore and Long both doubles, singled, and drove in a run, Julia Thornton doubled and singled, and Taylor Tomko singled and drove in a run.

— Kennedy Catholic 19, Farrell 4 (3 inn.) — At Farrell, Clarissa Ealy tripled, doubled, and scored three times and Alaina Suhar collected a pair of doubles and three runs scored as KC earned the Region 1 win.

Also for the Golden Eagles, Lydia Grove collected a double, two singles, and three runs scored, Alaina Utlak scored three times, Isabella Galaska doubled, and Brooke Kirkpatrick was the winning pitcher.

Maria Harrison suffered the loss for Farrell. She led the Steelers at the plate with a home run.

— Sharpsville 15, Lakeview 0 (3 inn.) — At Stoneboro, Breanna Hanley tossed a one-hitter and Hanley, Lily Palko, and Alli Davis hammered homers in the Region 1 win. Hanley struck out seven batters and issued no walks.

Palko also doubled and drove in three runs, Davis added a single and drove in four, Hanley also singled, Avery McFeaters tripled, doubled, and drove in two, Izzie Candiotti doubled and singled, and Bella Ritenour and Keeley Whitaker singled and drove in a run.

Izzy Chaffee singled for Lakeview. H. Brazel, Reagan Booher, and Faith Cox pitched. The trio had no strikeouts, three walks, and gave up 13 hits.

— Shaler 10, Mercer 1 — At Shaler High in Pittsburgh, Charly Driscoll fired a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk to lead the WPIAL's Class 5A Titans (13-3) past Mercer (5-7).

Cate Gordon led Shaler at the plate with a two-run homer and a single. V. Sig doubled and K. Yeager doubled and singled.

Pressley Washil suffered the loss for Mercer. She fanned one batter, walked one, and gave up eight runs on seven hits in five innings.

Washil led the way for Mercer at the dish with a double and a single.

— Brookfield 5, Newton Falls 2 — At Newton Falls, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and led until the top of the seventh when the Warriors plated five runs to earn the win.

Miranda Nicholson went the distance for Brookfield. She had six strikeouts, walked three, and allowed seven hits.

Abby DeJoy doubled, singled, and drove in a run for Brookfield while Jenae Pugh and Anna Reichart both singled and had one RBI.

Sophie Tvaroch pitched all seven innings for Newton Falls. She struck out a dozen batters, issued one walk, and gave up eight hits.

Emily Knight hit a solo home run for the Tigers and Zoe McElrath had a pair of singles.

BASEBALL

— Hickory 10, Greenville 5 — At Greenville, the Hornets improved to 11-0 in Region 2 and 12-0 overall with the win.

Hickory scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went up 5-0 before Greenville cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third. The Hornets went on to score two runs in the fourth and three in the seventh in the win.

Clay Wiesen ripped a pair of triples and drove in two runs for the Hornets, Johnny Leedham doubled, singled, and drove in a run, Zac Lanshcak singled and had two RBIs, Joey Fazzone singled twice and drove in a run, Max Moreland collected a pair of singles, DJ Donatelli had an RBI single, and Tyson Djakovich doubled.

Donatelli (2 1/3), Luca Bertolasio (two) and Fazzone split time on the mound for Hickory. They trio combined on seven strikeouts, five walks, and gave up 11 hits.

Bennett Hayne took the loss for Greenville. The pitcher went one-third of an inning, allowing four runs on three hits.

Noah Philson, Jack Strausser, Collin Wilson, and Nick Solderich each racked up multiple hits for Greenville.

— Oil City 7, Sharon 6 — At Johnny Pepe Field in Sharon, the Tigers battled back, but fell short in the Region 2 encounter.

Oil City jumped out to a 7-2 lead after two innings of play. Sharon added one run in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth, but couldn't tie the game to force extra innings.

Jason Stanek (5 1/3 innings) and Cole Voytik pitched for Sharon. They combined on four strikeouts, eight walks and only surrendered six hits. Charlie Motter (2 2/3), Koen Bearer (2 1/3), and Jacob Teeter split time on the hill for the Oilers. They collected five strikeouts, issued two walks, and gave up 13 hits.

Mikey Rodriques had a pair of doubles for Sharon, Hayden Scarmack ripped two singles and drove in a pair of runs, Dante Currie doubled, singled, and had an RBI, Stanek singled and drove in a run, and Voytik added two singles and an RBI.

Conner Lockhart and Bearer each doubled for Oil City while Connor Highfield, Will McMahon, and Justin Dunkle all singled and drove in a run.

— Sharpsville 12, Mercer 2 (5 inn.) — At Brandy Springs Park in Mercer, Braden Scarvel and Brock Lenzi tossed a two-hitter as the Blue Devils (11-0, 11-1) grabbed the Region 1 win.

Scarvel collected six strikeouts and only issued three walks in 6 2/3 innings. Brock Lenzi had one strikeout and one walk.

James Thomas led the Devils at the dish with a double, two singles, and four RBIs. Also, Stephen Tarnoci hit a solo home run and singled, Brock Lenzi doubled and singled, Luke Distler had a two-bagger, Josh Divens singled and drove in a pair of runs, and David Moyer added an RBI single.

Troy Bachman doubled and singled for Mercer. Julian Lawrence (three innings), Mattocks (1 2/3), and Bachman pitched for Mercer. They collected five strikeouts, walked six, and gave up 10 hits.

— West Middlesex 12, Lakeview 11 — At Stoneboro, the Reds and Sailors banged out 24 hits and Lakeview plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short as WM earned the Region 1 victory.

Devin Gruver blasted a home run and two doubles and drove in three runs for the Big Reds, Kyle Hurley homered, singled, and drove in a pair of runs, Richie Preston singled twice, Julian Trott doubled and had an RBI, Blaise Fox singled and drove in three, and Blaze Knight and Gio Rococi were each credited with an RBI.

Fox (three innings), Jacob Crocker (two), Evan Gilson (1 1/3), and Gruver pitched for WM. They combined to strike out 10 batters, walked nine, and yielded 14 hits.

Chris Mong (three innings), Ryan Toth (three), and Chase Hostetler split time on the mound for Lakeview. The trio fanned four, walked eight, and gave up 10 hits.

Hostetler had a home run, two singles and three RBIs for the Sailors, Garret Guthrie hit a solo home run and singled, Owen Dye belted a solo homer and singled,

Jackson Gadsby, Mason Bevan, and Ted Shillito all doubled and drove in a run, Cody Fagley and Brody Snyder both singled and had an RBI, and Grady Harbaugh doubled, singled, and drove in a run.

— Wilmington 13, Conneaut (Ohio) 0 (5 inn.) — At Conneaut, Rocky Serafino hurled a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks as the Hounds (9-2, 10-4) rolled in the Region 1 contest.

Tyler Mikulin ripped two doubles and drove in three runs for the Hounds, Cole McCallister was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, Ben Miller collected two doubles and drove in a run, and Garret Heller doubled, singled, and had an RBI.

— Brookfield 18, Liberty 2 (5 inn.) — At Brookfield, Mark Randall had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs and Hays Montgomery doubled, singled, and drove in three as the Warriors routed the Leopards.

Also for Brookfield, AJ Bartolin doubled, singled, and drove in a pair of runs, Hunter Baum, Brayden Sangregorio, and Ian Reichart each singled and had an RBI, and TJ Laverty and Connor Heater both singled and drove in two runs each.

Montgomery (three innings) and Gavin Marsh struck out eight batters, walked two, and only allowed four hits for the Warriors.

BASKETBALL

District 10 released the 2022-23 and 2023-24 regions for basketball on Monday. The following are the regions for local teams.

BOYS

Region 1: Commodore Perry, Farrell, Jamestown, Kennedy Catholic, and Rocky Grove. All teams are Class 1A.

Region 2: George Junior Republic, Lakeview, Mercer, Reynolds, Sharpsville, and West Middlesex. All teams are Class 2A.

Region 5: Greenville, Grove City, Hickory, Sharon, Slippery Rock, and Wilmington. Greenville and Wilmington are Class 3A. The others are 4A.

GIRLS

Region 1: Commodore Perry, Farrell, Jamestown, Kennedy Catholic, Lakeview, Mercer, Reynolds, and West Middlesex. CP and Jamestown are Class 1A, the other teams are 2A.

Region 4: Greenville, Grove City, Hickory, Sharon, Sharpsville, Slippery Rock, and Wilmington. Greenville, Sharpsville, and Wilmington are Class 3A. The others are 4A.
