Roundup: Ridgewood boys thump NCT, swimmers thrive at D-II sectional

UHRICHSVILLE — Ridgewood's youthful boys basketball team will take valuable momentum into the postseason.

The Generals drew the early game at the Inter-Valley Conference Showcase on Saturday at Claymont High, but they were more than up to the task in a 53-38 win against neighboring Newcomerstown.

Freshman big man Logan Ridenbaugh scored six of his 12 points in the pivotal third quarter, when the Generals extended a 28-26 lead at halftime to 41-29 entering the fourth.

Five players scored in the final frame for Ridgewood (4-17), which had seven players score and four score at least nine points.

Senior Kaulean Smith, who hit 5 of 5 free throws, tallied 13 points and senior guard Trent Warden added 12 with a pair of 3s for Ridgewood. Chris Matthews chipped in nine.

Javyn Lafferty scored a game-high 17 points for Newcomerstown, which hit eight 3-pointers, but only four inside the arc. The Trojans were also outscored 15-3 at the free-throw line.

Swimming

Local teams compete at Steubenville sectional: Coshocton's girls and River View's boys posted top-five finishes at the Division II East District sectional at Steubenville High School.

In the girls meet, Coshocton's Courtney Snyder, Gabriella Wesney, Ella Baylor and Sophia McFadden was third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:54.4); Cady Jackson and Lilly Masters were fifth in the 200 medley relay (2:12.5) and Jayden Jones ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:04.8).

Jackson joined Snyder, Wesney and McFadden for a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (4:20.9).

Snyder also placed sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:14.1), while Baylor was eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:23.1).

McFadden was fourth in the 50 freestyle (:26.8) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (6:22.2) for Coshocton; Gabriella Wesney was seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:16.8).

River View's Ally Fischer was fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:12.7) and 200 freestyle (2:21.6), while Kam McGinnis, Kynsingten McMasters, Piper Andrews and Fischer was sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.8) and 400 freestyle relays (4:32.8) . McMasters was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.9).

Coshocton totaled 168 points, trailing fourth-place Martins Ferry (176 1/2) and the top three of champion Dover (518), St. Clairsville (232) and Steubenville (202). River View was seventh with 124.

In the boys meet, River View was fourth with 193 points and Coshocton 18th with 27. Dover won the meet with 338, followed by St. Clairsville (247) and Indian Creek (216).

Jonathan Vu was fifth in the 50 freestyle (:24.0) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.3), while he also was on the 200 freestyle relay with Colin Addy, Carter Knicely and Jesse Shoemaker that was second (1:36.7) and the 200 medley relay with Knicely, Jamison Adams and Addy that was fifth (1:58.2).

Addy also clocked in at :23.20 in the 50 freestyle, which trailed only Zach May of St. Clairsville (:23.19). Addy also recorded a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (:51.2), where Shoemaker was sixth (:54.5) and Adams 10th (:58.1). Adams added a third in the 100 backstroke (1:04.3).

District qualifiers will be announced on Sunday.
