ROUNDUP: Rose sets itself up for chance at back-to-back HCAC football titles

Nov. 7—Rose-Hulman's football team will compete for its second consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and its third NCAA Division III playoff appearance next Saturday.

That's assured because the Engineers moved to 6-0 in HCAC play with a 47-17 victory Saturday at Hanover College.

The Engineers (6-3 overall) will travel to No. 23-ranked Mount St. Joseph (9-0, 6-0 HCAC) in a week for at 1:30 p.m. clash in Cincinnati. In 2021, Rose defeated Mount St. Joseph 58-21 in the regular-season finale at Cook Stadium to capture the HCAC championship.

On Saturday, Rose-Hulman quarterback Miguel Robertson finished 14 of 23 through the air for 223 yards and three touchdowns, while 5-foot-10, 210-pound junior Grant Ripperda rushed for career highs of 204 yards and three TDs on 41 attempts. Other key offensive contributors included Daniel Huery with seven receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns; Jailen Hobbs with three catches for 78 yards and one TD; and Kyle Rehberg with field goals of 19 and 28 yards to go along with five extra points.

Rose dominated the second half by a 23-0 score to push its way to the win. Robertson and Huery connected on touchdown strikes of 58 and 18 yards, Ripperda scored on a 3-yard run and Rehberg capped the scoring with a 28-yard field goal.

This was Rose-Hulman's 15th consecutive triumph against HCAC opponents.

Girls basketball

Terre Haute North 41, Evansville Central 31 — At North, Preslee Michael scored a game-high 18 points Saturday as the Patriots opened their season with a win.

Becca Gore and Aubrey Ervin added seven points each and Jetta Harmon, Hallie Hayes and Lilly Jensen scored three apiece for the Patriots, who play at Avon on Tuesday.

Mooresville 48, Northview 35 — At Brazil, the highly regarded visitors took a 13-0 first-quarter lead and the Knights could never catch up.

Audri Spencer had 19 points and Brynlee Clarke scored 10 for Northview, 0-1, which plays Tuesday at White River Valley.

Sullivan 61, Clay City 22 — At Sullivan, Lexis Drake had 11 points and Jacie Wilson and Isabelle Harris 10 each as the Golden Arrows improved to 2-0.

Both teams have home games Tuesday, Sullivan against Bloomfield and the 0-1 Eels against Cloverdale.

North Central 64, Eminence 35 — At Farmersburg, the host Thunderbirds broke the game open after a slow start as Jalyn Davidson had 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals and Samantha Secrest 16 points, six rebounds and six steals.

North Central, 1-0, is at Dugger Union on Tuesday while Eminence, 0-1, hosts Clay City on Friday.

Lakers win twice — At Roachdale, Shakamak defeated Riverton Parke 47-34 and host North Putnam 37-32 to win the Hoosier Heartland Tip-off Classic.

Now 3-1, the Lakers host Washington Catholic on Tuesday. Riverton Parke, which beat Indianapolis Riverside 57-9 in the third-place game, is now 2-1 and hosts South Vermillion on Thursday.

Wolves win — Parke Heritage won their season opener 63-17 at North Montgomery. Sophomore Emma Simpson led all scorers with 26 points and connecting on 3 3s. Sophomore Addison Jenkins added 10 for the Lady Wolves. The Lady Wolves play South Putnam at home Tuesday and again Thursday in the Banks of the Wabash Tournament against North Vermillion at Riverton Parke.

— At Peoria,

* Ill., Marshall freshman Molly Farrell finished in the girls race and the girls teams of Marshall and Robinson placed 11th and 19th respectively in the Illinois High School Association Class 1A state finals Saturday morning at Detweiller Park.

Farrell's time over 3 miles was 17 minutes and 47.88 seconds.

Team champions were Chicago DePaul College Prep (boys) and Tolony Unity (girls).

Camryn Cheesman had a runner-up finish, while Sadie Osburn placed third and Kayleigh Medley and Shelbie Hancock both took fourth.
