Roundup: Sharpsville baseball wraps up Region 1 title with win over Conneaut (Ohio)

— Sharpsville 11, Conneaut (Ohio) 3 — At Kevin S. Yarabinec Field in South Py Twp., the Blue Devils (15-3) clinched the Region 1 title with a rout over the Spartans.

Sharpsville had to win to clinch the region crown on percentage points. If the Devils had lost, Wilmington would have captured the region title. The Blue Devils are 14-1 in Region 1 while Wilmington is 14-2 (15-4 overall).

On Thursday, Region 1 Sharpsville came out on fire, scoring four runs in the first inning and four in the second en route to the rout of Region 2 Conneaut.

Braden Scarvel (3 1/3), James Thomas (two-thirds), and Stephen Tarnoci combined on a four-hitter for the Devils. The trio struck out 10 batters and walked four.

Luke Distler ripped two singles and drove in two runs for Sharpsville, Tarnoci singled twice, Brock Lenzi doubled and drove in a pair of runs, Collin Trontel contributed two singles and an RBI, Thomas doubled and drove in a run, and Eli Eckles collected two singles.

Bryce Spurlin (three innings), J.R. Hutchison (one), and Kiefer Mandagelo pitched for Conneaut. They fanned five, walked four, and allowed 11 hits.

Hutchison singled twice for the Spartans, Alex Kennedy singled and drove in two runs, and Zack Rice singled and drove in a run.

— West Middlesex 4, Reynolds 3 — At West Middlesex, the Big Reds (13-3, 13-6) and Raiders (1-15, 1-15) wrapped up the regular season with WM earning a tight Region 1 win.

West Middlesex took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Reynolds rallied to tie the game in the top of the sixth. The Reds plated a run in the bottom of the sixth and held the Raiders off the scoreboard in the seventh for the victory.

Gio Rococi (six innings) and Richie Preston combined to throw a four-hitter for WM. Rococi had nine strikeouts, issued no walks, and gave up all three runs on four hits. Preston fanned one batter.

Devin Gruver led the Big Reds at the dish with a double and two RBIs. Hunter Hoffman and Jacob Crocker had one RBI each.

Ryan Shardy (five innings) and Ryan Broadwater pitched for Reynolds. They combined on six strikeouts, three walks, and only allowed four hits.

Broadwater ripped two singles at the plate, P.J. Winkle singled and drove in a pair of runs, and Nolan Reichard singled and had an RBI.

— Kennedy Catholic 10, Sharon 9 (8 inn.) — At Hermitage, the Golden Eagles (5-11, 6-13) scored on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning for the walkoff win over the Tigers (7-7, 9-9).

Riley Mastowski singled and drove in three runs for Kennedy Catholic, Dom Rapp and Cord Pocza each singled and had an RBI, Davey Cochenour doubled and drove in a pair of runs, and Remington Hart doubled and singled.

Cochenour (four innings), Dom Ratkovich (one), and Stargell Fuhr pitched for KC. They struck out three hitters, walked three, and gave up 14 hits.

Santino Piccirilli led Sharon with a homer, two singles and five RBIs, Mikey Rodrigues and Peyton Koss had two singles each, Dante Currie singled three times and drove in a run, and Hayden Scarmack singled and had an RBI.

Rodrigues, Piccirilli, Cole Voytik, Mark Cattron, and Garrett Hoffman pitched for the Tigers. They combined on four strikeouts, 12 walks, and yielded eight hits.

— Hartville Lake Center Christian 9, Brookfield 0 — At Hartville, Ohio, the season came to an end for the 16th-seeded Warriors with a loss to No. 6 seed Lake Center Christian.

No stats were reported to The Herald.

LCC plays eighth-seeded Heartland Christian in the district semifinal on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

— Hickory 11, Titusville 1 (5 inn.) — At Hermitage, Hallie Miller tossed a complete-game four-hitter and the Hornets (12-4, 12-5) led 5-0 in the bottom of the first and were off to the races in the Region 4 win over the Rockets (4-12, 4-13).

Miller threw 70 pitches, 42 of them for strikes. She struck out two batters and walked two. She helped her cause at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.

Also for Hickory, Madeline Myers doubled and drove in a pair of runs, Kaelyn Fustos had two singles and two RBIs, Loren Myers and Malaiah Burns both collected two singles and an RBI, Kaitlyn Gilliland doubled and drove in a run, and Layla McClung singled and had an RBI.

Audrey Herman went the distance on the mound for Titusville. She finished the game with five strikeouts, two walks, and gave up 12 hits.

Offensively for the Rockets, Herman hit two singles and Danica Fonzo doubled and drove in their lone run.

— Corry 12, Grove City 6 — At Memorial Park in Grove City, Haylee Dyne belted a pair of home runs to power the Beavers (8-8, 8-9) past the Eagles (8-8, 9-10) in the Region 4 contest.

The game was tied 5-all after three innings. Corry pulled away by scoring four runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth.

Dyne also went the distance in the circle for Corry. She struck out five batters.

Alli Goodwell drove in three runs for Corry, Payton McCray was credited with a pair of RBIs, and Lexi Frisina had two hits.

Logan Jones led the way for Grove City. She had three hits and three RBIs at the plate and went the distance in the circle with three strikeouts.

— Mercer 5, West Middlesex 4 — At Brandy Springs Park in Mercer, coach Jack Trott's Mustangs (7-7, 8-9) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to post the Region 1 win over the Reds (7-7, 7-8).

Mercer scored five runs in the fifth inning and held off West Middlesex to earn the victory.

Pressley Washil earned the win in relief of Rhiannon Sines. Sines (three innings) had no strikeouts, no walks, and gave up three runs on four hits. Washil fanned one, issued no walks, and allowed one run on two hits.

Alex Schuster hit three singles for Mercer while Lexie Walker and Avry Ryhal ripped two singles each.

Kaylee Long (five innings) and Ava Gilmore pitched for WM. Long struck out five batters, walked two, and gave up all five runs on nine hits. Gilmore had no strikeouts or walks and gave up two hits.

Gilmore led the Big Reds at the plate with a double.

— Jamestown 12, Slippery Rock 0 (5 inn.) — At Jamestown, coach Rodney Callahan's Muskies closed out the regular season with a 12-4 Region 4 record and 13-5 overall ledger.

Jamestown plated three runs in the first inning, one in the second, and six in the third en route to the region win.

Miranda Biles and Josie Pfaff led the way for Jamestown. Biles fired a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and one walk while Pfaff blasted a home run, singled, and drove in four runs.

Also for the Muskies, Reese Schaller doubled, ripped two singles, and drove in a run, Liz Kammerdiener tripled and singled, Kiley Matters had three singles, and Maya Floch contributed a pair of singles and an RBI.

Emma Green went the distance for Slippery Rock (3-13, 3-14). She had no strikeouts or walks and surrendered 15 hits.

Brooke Balint had the lone hit, a single, for the Rockets.

— Sharon 7, Oil City 1 — At Oil City, Miranda Metro threw a complete-game three-hitter and Iresha Norris and Claire Bodien hammered homers as the Tigers (8-8, 10-9) posted the Region 4 win over the Oilers (1-15, 3-16).

Sharon scored five runs in the top of the second inning on Lexi Berkson's RBI single, a two-run single by Metro, and RBI singles by Ella Connelly and Norris.

Bodien blasted a solo home run in the fifth inning and Norris followed with a solo homer in the sixth.

Oil City scored its lone run with an RBI single in the first frame by Shalyn Whittemore.

Norris homered, singled, and drove in two runs for Sharon, Bodien homered, Metro ripped a pair of singles and drove in a pair of runs, Connelly doubled and singled, Berkson had two singles and an RBI, and Ella Brown contributed a pair of singles.

Metro struck out nine batters in the circle, issued no walks, and gave up an unearned run on three hits.

Whittemore went the distance on the mound for Oil City. She issued no walks and gave up a dozen hits.
