A pedestrian was hospitalized with major injuries early Sunday after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident in the Simi Valley area, authorities reported.

The 26-year-old Simi Valley man was struck by a black sedan that left the scene after the crash reported around 3 a.m. on Tierra Rejada Road between Highway 23 and Madera Road, Officer Ryan Ayers of the California Highway Patrol said.

Ayers said later Sunday that officers had arrested a 41-year-old woman from Burien, Washington, in connection with the crash. She was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run with injury, he said.

She had been booked into Ventura County jail by mid-afternoon, jail records showed.

Ayers said the pedestrian was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. The extent of his injuries was unknown Sunday.

Officers have not had a chance to talk to the pedestrian and it was unclear what he was doing when he was hit, Ayers said.

A house caught fire Sunday in west Ventura, displacing half a dozen people, but the blaze was extinguished quickly after firefighters arrived from a station located a little more than a block away.

Ventura Fire Battalion Chief Luis Manzano said crews put out the fire within 15 minutes of the time the initial call came in around 7:30 a.m. The blaze originated in a small crawl space in an attic of the single-family house in the 300 block of West Ramona Street and was contained there, but additional smoke damage was found throughout the house, he said.

No one was injured, he said, and the cause is still under investigation.

Of the six people reported to be living in the house, only one was present around the time of the fire, he said.

"Everybody else was out of town," Manzano said.

Residents of the house had to find another place to live temporarily, he said. Red Cross was alerted about the situation but he did not know if the residents had made connections with the rescue agency.

A total of 21 fire personnel went to the scene from the Ventura City and County fire departments, he said.
