Roundup: Southwest soccer ties Tabor, wins conference title

May 1—WINSTON-SALEM — Southwest Guilford tied Mount Tabor 1-1 in Piedmont Triad 3A Conference girls soccer Thursday at Mount Tabor.

With the win, the Cowgirls moved to 4-0-1 in the conference and 11-1-2 overall — capturing their third straight conference title and earning the PTC's automatic berth into the state playoffs, which will be seeded this weekend.

Kaia Thompson scored in the first half to give Southwest a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Spartans (4-5-2, 4-1-1) tied the match in the second half, and neither team scored in the overtime periods.

Jamie Oleson made five saves in goal.

HP CENTRAL, PAGE

HIGH POINT — High Point Central fell 7-0 against Page in Metro 4A Conference girls soccer Thursday at Correll-Morris Field.

The Bison dropped to 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

HP CHRISTIAN, GREENSBORO DAY

GREENSBORO — Greensboro Day beat High Point Christian 4-0 in PTAC girls soccer Thursday at GDS.

Cameron Martin made seven saves in goal for the Cougars (6-10 overall, 2-8 conference), who trailed 2-0 at halftime.

GLENN, WEST FORSYTH

KERNERSVILLE — Glenn lost 10-1 against West Forsyth in Central Piedmont 4A Conference girls soccer Thursday at Glenn. The Ladycats dropped to 0-13 overall and 0-10 in the CPC.

BASEBALL TW ANDREWS, JORDAN-MATTHEWS

HIGH POINT — T.W. Andrews lost 20-2 against Jordan-Matthews in PAC-7 2A baseball at Andrews.

The Red Raiders dropped to 0-2 both overall and in the conference.

LEDFORD, LEXINGTON

LEXINGTON — Bailey Smith struck out all nine batters he faced on the mound as Ledford raced past Lexington 15-0 in three innings Thursday in Central Carolina 2A Conference baseball at Lexington.

Walker Bethune had a double and an RBI while Bryce England had a hit and an RBI to highlight the Panthers (1-0 overall, 1-0 CCC), who tallied four hits for the game and scored 15 runs in the second inning.

WHEATMORE, RANDLEMAN

RANDLEMAN — Randleman beat Wheatmore 12-0 in PAC-7 2A baseball Thursday at Randleman. The Warriors dropped to 0-2 both overall and in the conference.

HP CHRISTIAN, DUDLEYHIGH POINT — High Point Christian defeated Dudley 11-0 in five innings Thursday in baseball at Oak View Baptist Church.

Sam Beck struck out five in four innings while Bass struck out two in one inning as the duo combined for a no-hitter.

Sam Sapp went 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs while Mitch Adams went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Cougars (17-4). Jake Dunlap and Byrson King each had a hit and an RBI, while Noah Hill doubled and Cole Philbin added a hit.

TENNIS PTC CHAMPIONSHIP

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford's Trung Nguyen and Jacob Rosen beat Mount Tabor's Whitt Rabold and Austin Blackwell 8-0 in Thursday's Piedmont Triad 3A Conference boys tennis doubles championship at Southwest.

Nguyen and Rosen, who earned a first-round bye, won their three earlier matches — including against teammates Daniel Etheredge and Grant Prevatt in the semifinals — to reach the championship match.

NWC CHAMPIONSHIP

MOUNT AIRY — Luca Pestana and Bobby Peters won the Northwest 1A Conference boys tennis doubles championship Thursday at Mount Airy.

Pestana and Peters won 6-3, 6-1 against teammates Timothy Hackman and Josh Hanflink.

RAGSDALE, SW GUILFORD

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale eked past rival Southwest Guilford 5-4 in nonconference girls tennis Thursday at Ragsdale.

Ruby Kemp, Ella Perez, Lexi Honeycutt and Hayley Salthouse won in singles for the Tigers (1-0), while Cameron Wright/Kemp won in doubles.

Audrey Serb and Maggi Mugi won in singles for the Cowgirls (1-1), while Serb/Tran Nguyen and Mugi/Lauren Harris won in doubles.

HP CHRISTIAN, GREENSBORO DAY

GREENSBORO — High Point Christian fell 9-0 against Greensboro Day in PTAC boys tennis at GDS.

The Cougars also lost 9-0 against Forsyth Country Day on Tuesday at the Oak Hollow Tennis Center.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, CALVARY DAY

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian rolled past Calvary Day 9-0 in boys tennis Thursday at Wesleyan.

Logan Prillaman, Duncan Bell, John Wagner, Jonathan Cimpean, Ben McCain and Luke Rudolph won in singles for the Trojans (7-6). Prillaman/Bell, Wagner/Cimpean and McCain Lucas Newton won in doubles.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, NORTHWEST GUILFORD

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness defeated Northwest Guilford 8-1 in nonconference girls tennis Thursday at Fourth of July Park.

Lindsay Bergelin, Michelle Petrangeli, Katie Dasher, Lourdes Lopez, Isabella Ross and Allison Dennen won in singles for the Villains (2-0). Dasher/Petrangeli, Lopez/Bergelin and Hannah Byon/Monka Rashkov won in doubles.

WHEATMORE, PROVIDENCE GROVE

TRINITY — Wheatmore swept Providence Grove 9-0 in PAC-7 2A girls tennis Thursday at Wheatmore.

Hannah Carter, Kara Comer, Hailey Hartley, Logan Rogers, Kelly Carrick and Hannah Wilson won in singles for the Warriors (1-0). Carter/Rogers, Comer/Wilson and Hartley/Carrick won in doubles.

LEXINGTON — High Point Christian pulled away to beat Union Grove Christian, 15-3, in five innings Thursday in nonconference softball at Union Grove Christian.

Maci Burkhart went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, Lexi Hall went 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Mary Douglas Hayworth went 2 for 4 with one double and three RBIs to lead the Cougars (8-5).

Sarah Kate Carr also doubled while Delia Bishop had a hit and an RBI, Natalie Wilkinson had two RBIs, and Autumn Charboneau had one RBI as HPCA broke the game open with five runs in each of the third and fourth innings.

Hall struck out 12 in earning the complete-game win.
