Roundup: Stare leads Newark boys past Reynoldsburg in OCC road win

Ethan Stare scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half Friday, after Newark took an 11-point halftime lead, and the Wildcats rolled to a 45-30 Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division win at Reynoldsburg.

Stare also had six rebounds and three assists for Newark (5-1, 1-1), which shot 53 percent from the field including 6-of-12 on 3-pointers. The Wildcats limited the Raiders (1-2, 1-1) to just 27 percent floor shooting including 3-of-22 on 3s.

Braylon Morris buried a trio of 3s for nine points, Grant Burkholder added eight points and three assists, while Steele Meister also scored eight for the winners.

Liberty stops GCA

Kaden Minier's 21 points and five steals led four Liberty Christian players in double figures Friday in a 73-58 Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League win against visiting Granville Christian Academy.

Josh Onabanjo added 17 points and 10 rebounds, Evan Adair also scored 17 and Hunter Zell had 12 for the Eagles (1-3, 1-1).

Eli Cooper rifled in 20 points for the Lions (1-2, 1-1) and Andrew Benvie notched 14.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Heath now 7-0

Taliyah Holmes struck for 22 points Friday and Caroline Robertson added 13, powering undefeated Heath (7-0, 3-0) to a 47-41 Licking County League-Cardinal Division win at Utica.

The Redskins dropped to 1-5, 0-4.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs scored a 54-48 non-league victory at Hamilton Township, as Holmes cashed in 22, Robertson added 10 and Allie Dunlap eight.

Rennie keys Watkins

Kalleigh Rennie poured in 20 points Friday and Camryn Wheeler added 11, as host Watkins Memorial (5-1, 3-1) downed Zanesville 50-35 in the LCL-Buckeye Division.

Jersey Draughn tossed in 16 for the Blue Devils (3-2, 2-2).

Kauble clutch for NC

Maddie Kauble made all eight of her foul shots in the final eight minutes Friday as Newark Catholic held off visiting Northridge 47-41 in the LCL-Cardinal Division.

Fini Kaiser led the Green Wave (3-1, 3-1) with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kylie Gibson also tallied 12 and had three steals. Mayci Sayre snagged seven rebounds.

Reese Callan made a trio of 3-pointers for nine points, and Naia Moore added eight for the Vikings (3-2, 2-2).

Lancers victorious

Charlee Palmer's 16 points and nine by Grace Sturgell sparked visiting Lakewood (3-3, 1-3) past Johnstown 39-36 in the LCL-Cardinal Division on Friday.

Kylie Sharp clicked for 17 and Lauren Baughman added nine for the Johnnies (2-4, 1-3).

Licking Valley wins

Visiting Licking Valley (2-3, 1-2) canned 13-of-15 foul shots Friday in a 32-23 LCL-Buckeye Division win at Licking Heights (2-4, 1-2).

Rylee Hillis led the Panthers with 11 points, and Peyton Robey added nine. Amya Thompson led the Hornets with 11 points.

GCA downs Liberty

Natalia Locke's 16 points led a balanced attack Friday as visiting Granville Christian Academy whipped Liberty Christian 52-30 in the Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League.

Ellie Flowers added 12 points, Ella Rhoads had 11 and Brianna Hubbard 10 for the Lions (2-2, 1-1).

Shelby Carr's 12 points led the Eagles (1-6, 1-2).

HOCKEY

Generals earn tie

Mason Hackett assisted Troy Johnston on a third-period power play goal Thursday, lifting Newark into a 1-1 Ohio Scholastic League tie with the Hilliard Wildcats at Reese Ice Arena.

Aaron Johnston had 23 saves for the Generals.

SWIMMING

Newark, Heights compete

Maryn Hatfield won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly for Newark on Wednesday in a double dual with Licking Heights and Oakstone Academy, also anchoring the victorious 400 freestyle relay of Morgan Woodruff, Meredith Pyle and Savanna Barnes.

Jenna Harkin captured the 400 freestyle for the Wildcats.

Cara Denlinger paced the Heights girls with a victory in the 100 breaststroke and the anchor leg on the victorious 200 freestyle relay with Elise McLaughlin, Sydney Graf and Abby Tigner.

Latham Wallis starred for the Heights boys, taking the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke while also anchoring the winning 200 freestyle relay of Aidan Nicol, Calden Drake and Tucker Gage.

Winning individual events for the Newark boys were Jeremy Schweiger (200 freestyle), Mitchell Mazzone (100 freestyle) and Hayden Flores (100 backstroke). They teamed up with Robert Wright to win the 200 medley relay, while Ben Jantad and Turin Hatfield swam with Schweiger and Mazzone on the winning 400 freestyle relay.
