The second shooting happened on April 12 at a tattoo parlor in the 2700 block of Sherwin Avenue in Ventura. June shot three people inside the business, seriously injuring two of them.

Deputies investigate El Rio shooting

Deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office investigated a reported shooting victim in El Rio on Friday morning.

Authorities were dispatched at 7:07 a.m. to the 2900 block of Cortez Street.

Capt. John Wright said the incident was initially reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. By the time authorities and paramedics arrived, deputies learned the victim had been transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle with injuries that weren't life threatening.

To investigate, deputies worked to clear out the residence where shots were fired. A large number of people were inside. Authorities deployed a BearCat armored vehicle and a sheriff's helicopter to assist with clearing out the home, Wright said.

Authorities remained on the scene for hours to determine whether a crime had occurred.

As of 5 p.m., the incident was still under investigation, although detectives had cleared the scene, said Capt. Jason Hendren. All information indicated the gunshot wound had been self-inflicted, he said, and there were no outstanding suspects or any threat to the public.

Former Westlake Village insurance agent sentenced for identity theft

A former Westlake Village insurance agent was sentenced to two years in Los Angeles County jail for fraudulently procuring pandemic relief loans, according to the California Department of Insurance.

Francis Okyere, 70, pleaded no contest this week to 17 counts of felony identity theft and grand theft by false pretenses.

An investigation by the state insurance department found Okyere stole the identities of multiple victims and used them to open a fraudulent insurance agency after having his license revoked in 2019.

Okyere then used the new business to claim COVID-19 pandemic relief loans via the Small Business Administration and the Paycheck Protection Program. In total, Okyere was found to have used identity theft to secure $38,963 in loan funds, authorities said.
