Roundup: Watkins Memorial boys tennis edges Mount Vernon

Nathan Walter and Graham Smith won at No. 1 doubles, 7-6, 6-4, Wednesday to lock up the Watkins Memorial boys tennis team’s 3-2 victory at Mount Vernon.

Liam Grennan at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-1, and Will Stought at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-5, also were winners for the Warriors (3-0).

SOFTBALL

Heights wins on road

Alissa West hit one of four home runs and drove in five runs for Licking Heights in an 11-3 season-opening victory at Grove City.

Lily Meidl, Evie Hays and Savanna Christ also homered for the Hornets, each driving in two runs, and Kaylyn Hopf and Ava VonBargen had two hits and two runs scored apiece. Lydia Rauch allowed one earned run and struck out two in a seven-hitter.

NC wins at home

Avery Nagel struck out five in a five-inning one-hitter for Newark Catholic in a 10-0 victory against visiting Grove City Christian.

Veronica Bailey totaled three hits and three runs scored, Addi Gerber a hit, a run scored and two RBIs and Emma Lohri a hit, two runs scored and an RBI for the Green Wave (2-1).

Newark rebounds

Dez Osler recorded three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, powering Newark to a 12-1 victory at Buckeye Valley.

Sarah Sickels added three hits, including a double, a run scored and two RBIs, Mallory Beck two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs and Karlee Clark a hit, a run scored and two RBIs for the Wildcats (2-2). Jaylen Jackson struck out four in two hitless innings.

Northridge cruises

Kaylee Goodwin homered and Emily Hanes added three extra-base hits as they combined for seven runs scored and eight RBIs in Northridge’s 22-0 season-opening victory at Grandview Heights.

Maddie Reese had three hits and three RBIs and Kenzie Hannahs and Lexi Thompson two hits and two RBIs apiece for the Vikings. Reese struck out 11 in a five-inning two-hitter.

Watkins wins

Emily Lipscomb had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for Watkins Memorial in a 15-0 victory against New Berlin (Wisconsin) at Disney World.

Taylor Gerhardt added two hits, three runs scored and two RBIs, Jordyn Wycuff two triples and two runs scored and Carsyn Cassady a hit and three RBIs for the Warriors (3-0). Cassady struck out 11 in four innings.

BASEBALL

NC beats East Knox

Braylon Bates struck out four and allowed one unearned run and five hits in five innings, pitching Newark Catholic to a 9-3 victory at East Knox.

Bryan McAnally and Nate Ferrell had two hits apiece, and Troy Johnston scored twice for the Green Wave (2-0).

Heights wins on road

Carson Johnson homered, scoring two runs and driving in two in Licking Heights’ 9-5 victory at Westerville South.

Ben Pennington added two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, Brady Pennington three hits and an RBI and Kaleb Ribbing two hits and an RBI for the Hornets (2-1). Brady Pennington also struck out two in 1 2/3 hitless innings to close the door.

Newark ties

Owen Poole and Tyler Flint combined for 13 strikeouts and allowed four hits for Newark in a 1-1 tie against visiting Teays Valley as the game was called after seven innings because of darkness.

Kyle Driskel had a hit and a run scored and Jayce Dansby a hit and an RBI for the Wildcats (1-0-1).

Granville falls on road

Jacob Smith had two hits and two RBIs for Granville in a 6-3 loss at Jonathan Alder.

Ezra Kurek added two hits and an RBI for the Blue Aces (1-1).

Heath drops home game

Hayden Woodward doubled and drove in two runs for Heath in a 16-2 loss against visiting Delaware.

Connor Corbett had two hits and a run scored, and he also struck out five and allowed no earned runs in three innings of relief for the Bulldogs (1-1).

TRACK

Heights sweeps titles

Addison Caudill was a part of two winning school records in the 1,600 (5:27) and joining Emma French, Liz Killey and Morgan Watkins in the 3,200 relay (10:17) on Tuesday, leading the Licking Heights girls to the team championship at Hamilton Township.

Temi Jaf-Ogunlayi was a double winner in the 100 (12.85) and 200 (26.68) and joined Amya Thompson, Chanell Harris and Symaya McDougall on the winning the 400 relay (51.96). French added a win in the 300 hurdles (50.87), Watkins in the 800 (2:44), Bri Summers in the 3,200 (15:58) and Watkins, Caudill, French and Jermera Clemons in the 1,600 relay (4:32).

In the boys meet, D.J. Fillmore won the 100 (10.91) and long jump (21-feet-3.75) and also joined Jalynn Fillmore, Simi Jaf-Ogunlayi and Nick McDougall on the winning 400 relay (43.57) and Jalynn Fillmore, Kellen Fields and Da'metrious Boyd on the winning 1,600 relay (3:37). Other Heights winners were Jalynn Fillmore in the 200 (23.97), Simi Jaf-Ogunlayi in the 400 (52.88), Fields in the 300 hurdles (41.48) and Alex Amartey in the discus (115-7).
