Roundup: WM softball team beats Hounds; Sharon's Metro hits another walkoff single

May 11—SOFTBALL

— West Middlesex 4, Wilmington 2 — At the Richard J. Kritz Memorial Complex in West Middlesex, Ava Gilmore tossed a complete-game six-hitter as the Reds stunned the Hounds. Gilmore, who threw 58 strikes on 87 pitches, struck out four batters and only issued three walks.

Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. WM plated all four of its runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. The Hounds tacked on one run in the top of the seventh.

Taylor Tomko doubled and drove in a run for the Reds and Kaylee Long ripped a pair of singles.

Ava Williamson suffered the loss for Wilmington. She had nine strikeouts, issued six walks, nad gave up two runs on two hits. Jadyn Flick fanned four, issued no walks, and gave up two runs on three hits.

Malia Baney doubled and hit two singles for the Hounds, Maelee Whiting doubled, and Karah Deal was credited with an RBI.

— Reynolds 21, Kennedy Catholic 2 (3 inn.) — At Transfer, Marissa Hillyer ripped three doubles, singled, and drove in five runs and Halyn Cawthorne homered, singled, and drove in four as the Raiders rolled in the Region 1 encounter.

Rylee Gearhart fired an abbreviated no-hitter for Reynolds. She fanned eight batters and issued four walks.

Also for the Raiders, Emma Boland hit two triples, singled, and drove in two runs, Chloe McLaughlin ripped a pair of doubles and drove in a pair of runs, Andrea Hillyer tripled, singled, and had an RBI, Kaylee Diefenderfer singled and drove in two, Mackenzie Herman collected two singles and an RBI, and Kendall McLaughlin singled and drove in a run.

Kennedy Catholic stats were not reported to The Herald.

— Sharon 8, Corry 7 (10 inn.) — At Wengler Field in Sharon, Miranda Metro delivered a walk-off single for the second straight day as the Tigers edged the Beavers in the Region 4 clash.

Sharon loaded the bases on bunts by Kurtasia Chester and Jersey Tracy. Metro ripped a single up the middle for the win.

Corry took a 7-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a Sharon error and two consecutive singles by Haylee Dyne and Lexi Frisina.

The Tigers tied the game at 7-all in the bottom of the eighth when Claire Bodien walked, Dalaini Bayer singled, and Ella Brown belted a three-run homer.

Sharon was up 4-2 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning when Corry's Kendyl Scouten hit a two-run single to right.

Offensively for Sharon, Brown hit the three-run blast, Metro had three singles and two RBIs, Bodien belted a two-run homer and single, and Iresha Norris added two singles.

Metro went all 10 innings on the mound for the Tigers. She struck out six batters, walked two, and gave up four earned runs on eight hits.

For Corry, Frisina had three singles and an RBI, Lexi Hasbrouck doubled and singled, and Kiran Bugbee doubled.

Frisina went the distance for the Beavers. She had nine strikeouts, six walks, and surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits.

— Slippery Rock 7, Titusville 6 — At Titusville, Slippery Rock led 5-4 entering the seventh inning and fell behind 6-5 after Titusville scored two in the top of the seventh, but Butler County's Rockets pulled out the win by plating two in the bottom half of the seventh for the Region 4 win.

Ciani D'Antoni tossed a complete-game five hitter for Slippery Rock. She had eight strikeouts and issued three walks.

Sam Meredith led SR at the plate with four hits and two RBIs, Brooke Balint collected two singles and drove in a run, Kinzie Miller singled and drove in a pair, Emma Green doubled and had an RBI, and D'Antoni was credited with an RBI.

— Jamestown 8, Grove City 7 — At Jamestown, Leona Brown hit a walkoff RBI double to lift the Muskies to the Region 4 win.

Brown had two doubles and two RBIs and Reese Schaller belted a grand slam and singled for Jamestown.

Grove City jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Muskies battled back to take a 7-6 lead in the fifth. The Eagles tied the game in the sixth and Brown's RBI double was the difference.

Kiley Matters had three singles for the Muskies, Miranda Biles singled and drove in a pair of runs, Liz Kammerdiener collected two singles, and Josie Pfaff and Savannah Thurber both doubled.

Biles went the distance on the mound for Jamestown. She had nine strikeouts, one walk, and gave up 13 hits.

Logan Jones suffered the loss for Grove City. She fanned one batter, walked two, and gave up a dozen hits.

Offensively for GC, Jones posted ofur singles and two RBIs, Rylie Eaton doubled, singled, and drove in a pair, Selah Severson doubled and drove in three runs, Helena Wolbert added three singles, and Johanna Smiley contributed two singles.

— Mercer 13, Lakeview 6 — At Stoneboro, the Lady M's erupted for eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the regular-season series sweep of the Lady Sailors.

After Lakeview pulled to within 5-4 after five innings, Mercer (6-6, 6-7) got some breathing room with a two-run single from Pheobe Eakman. An inning later, Lexi Walker and Eakman each drove in two runs, while Pressley Washil and Alex Schuster each drove in a run to hand the Lady M's a 13-4 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.

Lakeview senior Chayda Knierman's two-out single drove in Allie Sontheimer and Izzy Chaffee for the final two runs.

Mercer grabbed an early 2-0 lead on an Eakman grounder and a Lakeview error. Lily Erwin's two-run single highlighted a three-run, four-hit third inning for the Lady M's. The Lady Sailors (1-9, 1-9) scored twice in the bottom of the third on Reagan Booher's solo home run and a pair of Mercer errors and pulled to within 5-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Offensively for Mercer, Eakman went 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs and Maddie Daris ripped 4 singles. Avry Ryhal and Washil had a pair of singles, while Ivory Sines went the distance in the circle.

Faith Cox singled and doubled, while Zoe Proper connected on 2 singles to pace the Lakeview offense — Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin.

BASEBALL

— Sharpsville 7, Lakeview 5 — At Kevin S. Yarabinec Field in South Py Twp., the Sailors scored three runs in the final two innings, but the Blue Devils held on for the Region 1 win.

James Thomas led the Devils at the dish with a double, two singles, and two RBIs, Jack Leipheimer collected a pair of singles and three RBIs, Josh Divens had two singles and drove in a run, Brock Lenzi doubled, and Carter DeJulia drove in a run.

Leipheimer pitched 6 1/3 innings for Sharpsville. He struck out five batters, issued no walks, and gave up 11 hits. Stephen Tarnoci had one strikeout and gave up one hit.

Chase Hostetler (four innings) and Jackson Gadsby pitched for Lakeview. The duo struck out three, issued two walks, and gave up 10 hits.

Mason Bevan led the Sailors with three singles and two RBis, Cody Fagley and Garet Guthrie both collected two singles and drove in a run, Grady Harbaugh doubled, Ted Shillito ripped two singles, and Owen Dye had an RBI.

— Conneaut (Ohio) 10, Jamestown 2 — At Conneaut, Alex Kennedy fired a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game Region 1 performance against the Muskies.

Kennedy also led the Spartans at the dish with a double, single, and four RBIs. Zack Rice added three singles for Conneaut and Bryce Spurlin had two singles and three RBIs.

Jamestown stats were not reported to The Herald.

— Newton Falls 9, Brookfield 7 — At Brookfield, the Tigers plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on for the win over the Warriors.

Gino Lazzari powered the Tigers at the plate with two doubles, two singles, and two RBIs, Ethan Powell had four hits, including a double, Alex Pennington doubled and drove in three runs, Jordan Dowling doubled, singled, and had two RBIs, and Owen Gazda singled and drove in a run.

Trevor Ruscoe (three innings), Dowling (three), and Lazzari split time on the mound for Newton Falls. The trio struck out nine batters, walked four, and allowed 12 hits.

TJ Laverty (four innings) and Hunter Warrender pitched for Brookfield. They combined for six strikeouts, six walks, and 12 hits.

Hays Montgomery doubled, singled, and drove in a run for the Warriors, Hays Montgomery ripped two singles and drove in a pair of runs, David Pawlowski and Teddy Moody both had two singles and an RBI, Donovan Pawlowski singled and drove in a run, and Gavin Marsh added a double.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

— Hickory 88, Slippery Rock 62 — At Slippery Rock, the Hornets (5-0, 8-0) clinched the Region 2 title with the win.

Jillian White earned wins in the 800 and 1600 and ran the anchor leg on the first-place 3200 relay team for Hickory. Bailey Wier, Myah Burns, Cecilia Perman, Zamyra Smith, and Christie Boren were double-event winners.

Audrey Kura captured the 100, 200, and 400 for the Rockets and Julia Coffaro took first in the long and triple jumps.

Note: Slippery Rock boys beat Hickory, 98-52, but results were not submitted to The Herald by deadline.
