Route 422 east reopened after fatal accident near Douglassville [Update]

Oct. 18—Route 422 eastbound at Douglassville was closed Tuesday for five hours after a fatal crash, emergency officials said.

Justine Twardowski, 27, of Birdsboro, died after her vehicle was hit by a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Ben Franklin Highway, which is Route 422, and River Bridge Road in Amity Township.

Twardowski was headed north on River Bridge Road when she was struck by an eastbound tractor trailer driven by Leslie Thompson Jr., 52, of Steelton, Dauphin County, Amity police said.

Twardowski was reported to be trapped in the wreckage and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:39 a.m., by Berks County Deputy Coroner Dylan Spang.

A cause and manner of death were not available Tuesday evening, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday, according to the coroner's office.

Thompson was uninjured.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, police said.

The highway was reopened at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
