Route 66 in Tinton Falls reopens after police standoff, investigation

The pursuit of a "person in crisis" led police to shut down Route 66 at the Garden State Parkway as officers at the scene negotiated with the man to exit his car.

The standoff started shortly after noon, leading to the closing of all lanes lanes of Route 66 and ramps for the Garden State Parkway. The highway has been reopened.

Some 30 local police and state trooper patrol cars were at the scene as the standoff continued.

The Tinton Falls Police Department did not immediately return calls.

Borough Mayor Vito Perillo said only that the man police were pursuing was in custody.

It's unclear how long the pursuit took and where it started.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office released the following statement: "Law enforcement officials were dealing with a situation that involved a person in crisis. The situation came to a peaceful resolution with no injuries and one subject in custody. Investigation is active and ongoing at this time."

A man was taken into custody just west of the Garden State Parkway around 12:35 p.m. after he got out of a newer Chevrolet Corvette.
