These are all of the routes U.S. airlines fly to Hawaii

Ben Mutzabaugh

Southwest Airlines shook up the travel industry Monday by announcing the launch of its long-awaited Hawaii service.

That comes March 17, when Southwest begins flying between Oakland, California, and Honolulu. Five other routes will come online by May 26. More are expected, including nonstop flights from San Diego and Sacramento to Hawaii.

Southwest rolled out fares as low as $49 each way and its expansion to Hawaii is certain to set off a competitive scrum with rival U.S. airlines that already fly to the high-profile leisure market.

While all of Southwest’s first Hawaii routes will operate from California, the carrier will face intense competition.

Six. U.S. airlines fly nearly 100 combined routes that connect Hawaii to the U.S. mainland and Alaska.

The California routes are especially competitive, but Southwest will face pressure from rival carriers able to route Hawaii passengers on one-stop itineraries via hubs such as Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston Bush Intercontinental, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington Dulles and Newark, New Jersey.

Alaska Airlines offers routes from a variety of West Coast airports.

Hawaiian Airlines, which will perhaps feel the biggest impact of Southwest’s entrance, flies about two-dozen routes between the state of Hawaii and the U.S. mainland. Its newest route – Honolulu to Boston – will launch next month and will become the longest domestic route flown by any U.S. carrier.
