Jesse C. Carson High School sent out a message to the community about student Dalton Gay passing away sometime on Saturday afternoon.

A school spokesperson told Channel 9 that Gay was a rising senior at the high school and was part of the Army JROTC program at South Rowan High School. The spokesperson also said Gay’s death was due to unexpected medical reasons.

The school will be offering grief counseling on campus at 5 p.m. on Sunday. There will also be a service honoring Gay at Charity Baptist Church on Sunday morning.

The Salisbury Post reports, Gay was given the Medal of Heroism last year through the Army JROTC for trying to save the life of a hit-and-run victim.
