Royal Aide Steps Down After Making “Unacceptable” Comments to Black Charity Founder at Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace has issued an apology and a royal aide has stepped down after a Black guest at a Palace reception revealed on social media how she was asked, “Where do you really come from?” Ngozi Fulani, who founded domestic abuse charity Sistah Space, went viral after she recounted her experience at the Palace on Tuesday on social media.
“Mixed Feelings about yesterday’s visit to Buckingham Palace,” she wrote. “10 minutes after arriving, a member of staff, Lady SH, approached me, moved my hair to see my name badge. The conversation below took place. The rest of the event is a blur.”
Ms Fulani then recounted how the household member asked her where she came from and when she said Hackney she was asked what part of Africa she was from and where she really came from.
Her account of the conversation on Twitter was met with horror and instantly shared around the world as Ms Fulani was sent messages of support.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson issued a statement saying that “the individual concerned” has stepped aside and would like to express her apologies. “We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to establish the full details,” the spokesperson said. "In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made. We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes.
In the meantime, the individual concerned would like to express her profound apologies for the hurt caused and has stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect. All members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times.”
Despite her ordeal, Ms Fulani appealed on social media for the person not to be named. “It is not our wish to reveal the person involved,” she posted. “Yes the person was offensive but it serves no purpose to name & shame her, it would make us just as bad.”
