The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have released a picture of their daughter Lilibet after celebrating her first birthday.

The photograph of Lilibet, who celebrated the occasion with family and close friends of the Sussexes at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor on Saturday, is understood to have been taken by family friend Misan Harriman.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s second child, born on 4 June 2021 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple have been “incredibly touched” by the birthday wishes that have flooded in for Lilibet.

More than 100,000 dollars (£79,800) in donations to the World Central Kitchen were made in her honour by people around the world, for which the Duke and Duchess have also expressed their gratitude.

It follows reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had returned to the US following a short trip to the UK for the jubilee celebrations.

The early departure means the Sussexes missed the finale of the festivities, which saw the Queen make a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the royal standard flag was raised above the residence during the pageant.

Mr Johnson seemed in cheerful mood for much of the event, smiling as he sat alongside wife Carrie behind Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge and their children George, Charlotte and Louis.

How the Buckingham Palace balcony became key to royal family’s existence

Monday 6 June 2022 16:13 , Saman Javed

The crowd outside Buckingham Palace roared with cheers on Sunday evening as the Queen stepped out on to the royal residence’s balcony.

Marking the conclusion of the long weekend, the Queen stood between Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George, who are first, second and third in line to the throne respectively.

As noted by Professor Pauline MacLaren from the University of London’s Centre for the Study of Modern Monarchy, a royal balcony appearance is “the monarchy at their most visible”.

“But it is also them at their most strategic. Time and again down the years, they have used appearances there – with considerable shrewdness, it has to be said – to emphasise and maintain their place at the heart of the nation,” MacLaren said.

We’ve taken a closer look at the key role the balcony of Buckingham Palace has played throughout the queen’s reign. Colin Drury reports:

Queen said she remains ‘committed to serving’ the nation

Monday 6 June 2022 02:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Queen has said she remains “committed to serving” the nation to “the best of my ability”, after she set the seal on her Platinum Jubilee celebrations by appearing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The 96-year-old monarch was absent for much of the extended Bank Holiday weekend, after finding the first day enjoyable but tiring, and in a message of thanks acknowledged this but said her “heart” had been with well-wishers.

The Duchess of Cornwall, patron of the Big Lunch, estimated that up to 18 million people could have taken part in Jubilee street parties, and the Queen expressed her hope this “renewed sense of togetherness” would be felt for years to come.

After the outpouring of public affection during her balcony appearance, the Queen said she was “humbled and deeply touched” so many people had taken part in celebrations marking her 70-year reign.

Surrounded by her family, she was cheered by thousands of well-wishers after stepping on to the balcony following the Platinum Pageant, which told the story of her life, and the nation, with an eccentric, fun and imaginative carnival-like display.

Smiling as she acknowledged the spectators, she looked down on The Mall where tens of thousands had waited in hope of seeing her.

The Queen said later in her message: “When it comes to how to mark seventy years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first. But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee.

“While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.

Family day out for Royals at Jubilee Pageant

Monday 6 June 2022 00:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

It was a family day out like no other, with prime seats in the royal box, catching up with cousins and clapping along to classic tunes.

The Platinum Jubilee Pageant was an afternoon of entertainment for members of the royal family, who all sat together alongside their siblings and cousins.

Prince Louis, the youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, moved around a little, cosying up to both his parents and his grandfather the Prince of Wales.

At one point, Charles rocked his four-year-old grandson from side to side on his lap.

Louis joined his big brother and sister, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, in the royal box.

As George stood for part of the parade, he mirrored his father William, both adjusting the front of their jackets at the same time.

He was also spotted resting his head on his hand during the show.

Lasting two and a half hours, it was not surprising that restlessness may have set in for the younger spectators.

Zara Tindall watched the pageant with three-year-old daughter Lena on her lap, while her other daughter Mia, eight, sat on her father Mike’s lap and had her arm around his neck.

At one point, little Lena sat on her 11-year-old cousin Savannah Phillips’s lap.

Princess Eugenie could be seen bouncing her son August on her knee.

The one-year-old was wearing a jumper with a Union flag on the front.

Later, Eugenie posted pictures and videos on Instagram showing August, her husband Jack Brooksbank, and her view of the pageant.

Meanwhile, the Princess Royal, 71, looked happy as she sat next to her brother Charles and clapped along to Kool & The Gang’s Celebration.

Those joining the royal family included Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

Time and again down the years, they have used appearances there – with considerable shrewdness, it has to be said – to emphasise and maintain their place at the heart of the nation.”

“You have met us and talked with us, you have laughed with us and cried with us. And most importantly, you have been there with us for these 70 years.”

Prince William makes moving speech about the planet

Saturday 4 June 2022 21:53 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Prince William makes an impassioned speech about the environment as he also honours his grandmother’s service.

“Our planet has become more fragile. Today, in 2022, as the Queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee, the pressing need to protect and restore our planet has never been more urgent. But like her, I am an optimist.

“Congratutlations to all of them. They won’t accept the status-quo, they wont accept that change is too difficult to deliver.”
