The Kansas City Royals announced a few roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres.

The Royals called up reliever Mike Mayers from Triple-A Omaha and placed reliever Amir Garrett on the Family Medical Emergency list. In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough was moved to the 60-day injured list.

“We used that roster spot to bring up Mayers to provide length for today,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Mayers has big-league experience with the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels. He recorded a 5.68 ERA in 24 appearances with the Angels last season.

The Royals signed Mayers to a minor-league contract this offseason. He has made eight starts in Omaha and logged a 6.88 ERA in 34 innings.

“He has been at this level before,” Quatraro said. “He has been a reliever and a starter. He’s been throwing the ball well at Omaha. We feel comfortable with him getting through the lineup a couple of times and providing us depth today.”

Garrett will be sidelined after his wife had an appendectomy. Quatraro provided an update on the situation.

“Fortunately, his wife is doing well and recovering,” Quatraro said.

Quatraro said he’d spoken with Yarbrough, as well. He said Yarbrough continues to meet with doctors and is progressing from the skull fractures suffered when he was hit by a line drive during a game.

“He sounded great and said he is really starting to feel better,” Quatraro said. “He’s progressing well and has a follow-up appointment tomorrow with the doctors.

“He should hopefully be cleared to start light activity if everything is going well.”
