Royals fans share their ideas for turning around team’s fortunes after slow start
One doesn’t have to delve too deep into the numbers to see the Royals are struggling this season.
They have a 4-15 record, and their .211 winning percentage is the second-worst in Major League Baseball. That includes a 1-12 home record.
The Royals are averaging an MLB-worst 3.1 runs per game, and the team ERA is 5.46, the third-worst in MLB. Fielding Bible shows the Royals’ defense has negative-2 runs saved, which is tied for 18th.
So, yeah, it’s been a tough three weeks to start the season for the Royals.
I asked fans what they think the Royals should do to turn around their fortunes. Many singled out players who should be released/sent to the minors. Some wanted to fire front-office staff. Others made jokes.
Here are just some of the responses from fans on turning the SS Royals ship around.
I'd also start investing more in international scouting, playing younger guys, and experimenting with different lineups.

Was hoping all winter they’d bring in Nimmo then Walker or Taillon. That would’ve been a start but until we spend money this is what we get. Fwiw I prefer to spend on a developed core and fill around it. But bringing in talent and showing the willingness to spend goes a long way

Less playing time and at-bats for dozier and JBJ.
Noticeable change in at-bat approaches. Swinging at way too much out of the zone
Melendez out of lead off or 2 spot till he figures it out
Clarke no longer used in close games.
Chapman used on high leverage spots— Thony, Infinte Power (@MastTerBase) April 19, 2023
Spend. Some. MONEY. You don't have to spend an absurd fortune, but you gotta spend something to get some quality players here.

1. Send any youth down that is struggling to work on themselves in Omaha. Potential problem with this is not very much major league ready talent in the minors.
2. At some point trade the following players if they’re having a good season: Duffy, Reyes, Dozier, Chapman, Barlow,— James Jones (@jones_jc9) April 20, 2023
They need to spend $$ to supplement the kids..1/2 this lineup shouldn’t even be in the majors

Hitting is finally coming around. The defense has decided to flop. To many extra outs, bases resulting in more runs, pitches, stolen bases. That cost us, what, 5 or 6 runs this week alone? Could’ve been more.
Way easier said than done: gotta be patient with RISP. Too many Ks.— Josh Simon (@simonsaysjoshd) April 19, 2023
Sherman has to show he’s an involved owner that cares about winning and do what he should’ve done this last offseason, either spend some money to try and be competitive or tear it all down fire everyone and restart. It starts at the top and if ownership doesn’t care we won’t

Long term? Change the drafting philosophy to emphasize position players that know how to be more patient at the plate & take a walk, rather than swinging at everything. (Clone Vinnie) Go after pitchers who don’t throw 100, but, that are known for their control. (Think Cleveland)

They need to figure out who can help them draft and develop pitching. They have had so many top 10 picks that don't work out. We simply do not have arms ever. That's the first thing that needs to be fixed.

Team babip of .264
I'll wait and hope they keep working on plate approach.— Part-Time Invasive Species (@deadmoneykills) April 20, 2023
At this point nothing except play better. There’s not really moves to make a month in.

They’ve got to fix scouting. They’ve whiffed consistently for years now. Other teams have hope in the minors but the Royals always seem to be near the bottom when it comes to farm club talent.

As sad as it would make me, it is time to trade Salvy. He deserves better at this point in his career and the Royals need to take the value he provides for the future. Learn from the mistake of not dealing Whit 2-3 years earlier than they did and getting pennies on the dollar.

Every since Sasquatch started showing up, the Royals luck at home has changed. Get rid of the hairy guy and things will turn around.

i’m ngl, i just have given up. we have ZERO identity. we need to get lucky with trades or prospects or something.

This season will not turn around.
Nothing can improve until new eyes are brought in from outside the org to scout, evaluate and draft players. Only new eyes can honestly assess where this franchise is and then take the appropriate steps.— gene davis (@gadavis4ever) April 20, 2023
Maybe pay for a big league third baseman and right fielder. We can’t keep going into a season with a starter who would not be on anyone else’s 40 man roster.
— John Williams (@JQuasar2010) April 19, 2023
Scout better. Draft better. Develop better.
— JVollmer (@Jason_Vollmer9) April 19, 2023
That’s the problem. Nobody has the faintest idea how to turn things around. This “rebuild” is looking more and more impossible every game
— ethan (@depressedksufan) April 20, 2023
They're the worst in so many metrics; there is no single solution except better ballplayers. Offseason development seems to have been a complete zero.
