Royals, superheroes lead Emmy nods in streaming surge

Netflix royal drama “The Crown” and Disney+’s Star Wars-inspired series “The Mandalorian” led the Emmy nominations Tuesday with 24 each.

Marvel’s WandaVision, another Disney+ series, had 23.

Cable network HBO and its new streaming sister HBO Max nabbed a network-leading 130 nods, with heavy favorite “Mare of Easttown” – a breakthrough hit for HBO Max – nominated, along with stars Kate Winslet and Jean Smart.

The latter touted in the press recently as having a “Smartaissance"... the former star of 80s series “Designing Women” scored a rare double nomination – the second for her leading role in another HBO Max show, “Hacks.”

Netflix was next among all networks with 129 nominations.

Its new period drama “Bridgerton” nabbing 12.

And Apple TV+ comedy "Ted Lasso" earned 20 nods.

The Emmy Awards air Sunday, September 19th.
