Royalston woman, Pepperell boy killed in unrelated off-road vehicle crashes

A Royalston woman was killed in an ATV crash in Maine over the weekend, while the Hubbardston man who was driving the vehicle suffered a serious head injury, according to the Maine Warden Service.

About 12:45 p.m. Saturday, wardens were called to an ATV crash on a trail near Quill Hill Road in Coplin Plantation, northwest of Augusta.

Abigail Divoll, 25, was riding side by side with Matthew Tolman, 26, when the crash occurred, authorities said.

According to the warden service, the two were leading a group of three ATVS when their vehicle entered a washout on the trail, causing the driver to lose control. A washout occurs when a portion of the trail is eroded by flash flooding or a small stream.

Divoll and Tolman were not wearing helmets, the warden service said, adding that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash. The matter remains under investigation.

Tolman was transported by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He remains hospitalized.

There was a second out-of-state crash that claimed the life of a Massachusetts resident on Saturday.

In Vermont, state police responded to a report of a utility vehicle crashing on Lost Mile Road in Newfane around 7 p.m. Saturday.

The vehicle was carrying six passengers, one adult and five children. A seven-year-old Pepperell boy was transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Matthew Conlon, 40, of Pepperell was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

According to Vermont State Police, Conlon lost control of the vehicle on a curve in the roadway and it overturned. Several other passengers were injured.

The crash remains under investigation, but alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor, according to Vermont State Police.
