ORIGINAL ARTICLE (Dec. 1, 2022): A woman allegedly attacked while working at an addiction center in northwest Rochester this week died hours later at Strong Memorial Hospital, according to Rochester police.

Officers are investigating the circumstances of the woman's death, which is potentially suspicious, as well as the initial incident that was reported as a "fight and possible assault of a staff member" at DePaul Addiction Services, 435 Dewey Ave. around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Lt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department.

RPD and the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office are working to determine what caused the woman's death and whether it was related to the earlier altercation. Her name was not released.

"There's a lot that we just don't know yet," he said.

When police arrived at the Dewey Avenue center on Tuesday, both people involved in the alleged assault had already left the building, Bello said. Officers were not able to ask either person involved about what occurred.

Later on Tuesday, RPD was contacted by hospital officials to alert officers that the same staff member - a woman in her 30s - was in critical condition at the hospital, Bello said. She died early Wednesday morning.

DePaul on Thursday issued a statement: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear colleague. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends. The safety and well-being of our staff members and residents is always our primary concern. The incident is being investigated by the authorities and we are fully cooperating to ensure that justice is served."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 911 or RPD's Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157.
