RTD's new, lower fares to take effect Jan. 1

Dec. 21—The new year will usher in new, lower fares for the Regional Transportation District's riders.

RTD provides services to 40 municipalities in eight counties within a 2,342-square-mile area that includes all of Boulder County.

The public agency's services include bus, rail, shuttles, ADA paratransit services and more transportation options.

"I believe public transportation is the great societal equalizer. We weren't all born on level playing fields," Debra A. Johnson, RTD general manager and CEO, said in a recent interview. "However, in order to take advantage of opportunities you have to have access."

The current fare from Longmont to Boulder and Denver is $5.25 for a 3-hour pass or $10.50 for an all-day pass.

However, beginning Jan. 1, the fare for Longmont RTD bus rides to Boulder, Denver and any other part of the RTD district, with the exception of the Denver International Airport, will amount to $2.75 for a three-hour pass or $5.50 for an all day pass.

The fare to get to DIA from Longmont will be $10 beginning Jan. 1.

The new fares were originally approved by the RTD Board of Directors in July.

Johnson, who has worked in the transportation industry for more than three decades, explained how when she first moved to the region just over three years ago it was difficult, even for her, to decipher the different fares.

"One thing that we learned quite naturally going through this (was) that we needed to establish three goals which were equity, affordability and simplicity as it related to our fares," Johnson said.
