Ruben Santiago Hudson’s autobiographical one-man play is finally coming to Broadway.

Some 20 years after it premiered at The Public Theater, “Lackawanna Blues” will kick off the Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2021–2022 season at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York City.

The Tony Award winning actor, director, producer and playwright will direct and star in the solo show, which is a celebration of the strong, big-hearted woman who raised him in a 1950s boarding house outside Buffalo.

Santiago-Hudson embodies more than 20 vibrant characters for the coming of age story, which was made into an award-winning HBO film produced by Halle Berry and directed by George C. Wolfe in 2005.

In a career-defining role, “Law & Order” star S. Epatha Merkerson led a star-studded cast, which included Marcus Carl Franklin, Hill Harper, Jimmy Smits, Terrence Howard, Mos Def, Carmen Ejogo, Macy Gray, Jeffrey Wright, Delroy Lindo, Academy Award winner Louis Gossett Jr. and Santiago Hudson.

For its expected Fall 2021 Broadway bow, “Lackawanna Blues” will feature new, original music by Bill Sims, Jr.
