Rudder problem forces plane with 4 people aboard to make emergency landing at Bellingham
A inbound plane from the San Juan Islands safely landed at Bellingham International Airport after experiencing issues with its rudder Thursday evening.
Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting and Bellingham Fire Department crews were called to the airport at 7:39 p.m. Thursday, June 30, for the report of an aircraft emergency, according to the PulsePoint app.
That came after a General Aviation Cessna Caravan airplane inbound from the San Juan Islands notified the air-traffic control tower at Bellingham International Airport that it was experience issues with its rudder, Port of Bellingham Director of Aviation Sunil Harman told The Bellingham Herald in an email.
The plane, which had four people aboard, was put on a short final for landing on runway 34, Harman reported. The plane landed safely with no injuries or damage, Harman reported, and it was able to taxi under its own power of the airfield.
Airport and Bellingham emergency crews were notified of the safe landing before arriving on scene, according to Harman, and there was no impact on commercial operations at the airport.
“The best type of Alert 2 outcome possible,” Harman wrote, referring to the code given for a major in-flight emergency.
