Rugby fans flock to Quincy to celebrate New England Free Jacks championship win

It’s a weekend of celebrations for the New England Free Jacks following their epic championship win last week.

The team captured their first Major League Rugby title in franchise history in Chicago, defeating the San Diego Legion in dramatic fashion.

Dozens of fans lined the street as a police and fire escort lead the team to Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“Never hurts to support Boston sports especially when they win a championship,” said John McGurty, of Quincy. “Especially having this in my hometown it’s some stuff that just makes you say you can’t miss out on this.” The team hosted a rally and ceremony at the stadium, kicking off their New England Championship Shield Tour.

After the rally, they traveled to seven other locations.

The New England Free Jack’s are Greater Boston’s first professional rugby team, representing all six New England states.

They were named an expansion franchise of Major League Rugby in 2018.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
