BUCKS COUNTY, Penn. -- Holy cow. A lone Holstein cow made a harrowing 11th-hour escape from death row before being captured Tuesday.

This story is no bull. But its main character apparently is one.

The black-and-white bull reportedly fell out of the back of an animal transport vehicle around 3 p.m. on the Bucks-Montgomery county border, according to Hilltown Police Chief Chris Engelhart.

The vehicle was headed to a slaughter house when its door malfunctioned, allowing the bull to escape, Engelhart said. It immediately started trotting between drivers behind four-wheels where it was captured on cellphone cameras.

The bull, who apparently had no name, was slightly injured in the escape attempt, but he was also headed to the slaughter house at the time he made his break.

The bull was captured by police and citizens and eventually returned.

The driver immediately knew it had lost one of its cattle, Engelhart said. Police and others assisted in corralling the bull for about an hour until another transport trailer arrived, Engelhart said.

Engelhart said he didn’t know what farm the bull came from, but runaway farm animals occasionally happen, though not necessarily on a highway.
