Runcie Club awards scholarships

Oct. 1—The St. Joseph Runcie Club has awarded five $1,000 scholarships to students attending Missouri Western State University. They are:

— Morgan Atoe, nursing.

— Brandon Johnson, wildlife biology.

— Graycen Prothero, biology.

— Alloura Stevens, criminal studies.

— Dara Young, nursing.

Founded in 1894, the Runcie Club is one of the oldest women's clubs west of the Mississippi. Today's 177 members continue to affirm the club's purpose to promote science, literature and education among the people of St. Joseph. With these ideals in mind, the Constance Faunt LeRoy Runcie Scholarship was established at Missouri Western in 2000 and has been awarded annually to students in their third/junior year or above who are majoring in the arts, humanities or sciences.

At the Club's Sept. 20 meeting, held at Scottish Rite Temple, Adriana Peacock and Lucinda Kerns described the work of the Friends of the Animal Shelter. The volunteer group has rescued hundreds of dogs, cats and other animals.
