This week, scores of candidates qualified to run for office in Sarasota and Manatee counties in elections this summer and fall.

Florida’s primary races are on Aug. 23 this year. When more than one candidate from the same political party is running for an office, those candidates will face off in a primary. The winner of the primary proceeds to the general election on Nov. 8.

Some of the candidates in Sarasota and Manatee counties are unopposed, which means that they are automatically elected to their offices.

The Sarasota and Manatee County School Board races are nonpartisan and will take place on Aug. 23. In Manatee County School Board Districts 2 and 5, if no candidate gets over 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will compete in a run-off on Nov. 8.
