What to do if your flight is delayed or canceled

If your flight is delayed, you may be able to switch to a different flight on your airline through its website or mobile app, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

You could ask your airline to transfer your ticket to another available seat on a different airline, but airlines are not required to accommodate your request or reimburse you for ticket purchases on another airline, USDOT says.

If your flight is canceled, most airlines will rebook you for free on their next available flight.

If you choose to cancel your trip as a result of a flight cancellation, you are entitled to a refund, even for non-refundable tickets.
