Rupert Everett has apologised for his unglamorous appearance on This Morning, explaining that he had no clean clothes left.

The Hollywood star's films include My Best Friend's Wedding, St Trinians, An Ideal Husband and Pret-a-Porter, but he was almost unrecognisable in a low-key navy jumper and matching woollen hat on Friday morning.

Everett, 62, started the interview with Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary by saying: "Listen, I've got to apologise to you guys first off to be dressed as if I'm off on a Christmas carol service.

"I've been driving all the way through the night to get here from Liverpool and I didn't have any clean clothes to put on."

The star said that he is currently filming TV series Funny Girl in which Gemma Arterton stars as a beauty queen and he plays her agent.

Adding that he was "living in Liverpool, living the dream", Everett said: "I drove all the way through the night, everything was closed on the motorway, detours everywhere..."

But Hammond put him at ease, telling him: "Babes, it's fine."

Everett also revealed that the hat was hiding an unflattering haircut that he was suffering for his art.

He said: "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to be disrespectful. And on top of that I've got a shaved head because I've got a wig that's a combover in my series.

"I've always dreamed of having a combover. I've got nothing (under the hat), I've shaved my head and I've got a tuft at the back that the wig is fixed to and I don't look very nice so I thought I'd better wear a hat."

Hammond and O'Leary are currently presenting ITV daytime show This Morning as stand-ins for Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield during half term.
