Russell back on top of region Governor's Cup

Feb. 19—RUSSELL — Russell High School's team was the overall winner at Saturday's Region 16 Governor's Cup Academic competition at the school, breaking a two-year winning streak by Ashland Blazer High School; Russell had won the previous 22 region titles before 2022.

Ashland Blazer High School placed second, with Boyd County placing third and Rowan County fourth.

Students and teams placing will advance to the Governor's Cup state finals March 8-11 in Louisville.

Mathematics testing: first — Alexandra Ellison (Ashland Blazer); second — Miguel Pangan (Russell); third — Myra Jindal (Russell); fourth — Ryan Yang (Rowan County); fifth — Anthony Lin (Rowan County).

Science testing: first — Snehan Saroch (Russell); second — Nathan Woolery (Ashland Blazer); third — Brody Kilburn (Russell); fourth — Drake Caudill (Paul G. Blazer); fifth — Justin Jiang (Russell).

Social studies testing: first — Dirk Hay (Ashland Blazer); second — Chase Holbrook (Russell); third — Ben Cosgriff (Rowan County); fourth — Eli Harper (East Carter); fifth — Justin Jiang (Russell).

Language arts testing: first — Ahya Farhat (Russell) with a perfect score of 50 out of 50 questions with and additional 10 of 10 tie-breaker questions; second — Anna Bocook (Ashland Blazer); third — Colton Thompson (Boyd County); fourth — Snehan Saroch (Russell); fifth — Nathan Woolery (Ashland Blazer).

Arts and humanities testing: first — Anna Bocook (Ashland Blazer); second — Laura Jiang (Russell); third — Caroline Yates (Ashland Blazer); fourth (tie) — Mia Brandenburg (Boyd County) and Isaac Love (Raceland-Worthington).

Writing composition: first — Reagan Hayes (Ashland Blazer); second — Madison Chapman (Russell); third — Kristin Casto (Elliott County); fourth — Carter Wells (Menifee County); fifth — Addisyn Skeens (Lawrence County).

Two regions in the state are yet to compete because of weather delays, several students from Region 16 are currently ranked in the top 10. They are:
