Watch: Russell Brand celebrates 20 years of sobriety and admitted the journey 'is never done on your own'

Russell Brand has celebrated 20 years of sobriety.

The comedian and podcaster took a moment to mark the occasion on social media, filming a short video to thank those who helped him.

The 47-year-old best-selling author captioned the video: "Thank you to all the people who have helped me to remain clean - it is never done on your own."

In the video, Brand says: "I'm 20 years clean and sober today. It's December the 13th. So, firstly I wanted to express my gratitude for all the people who have helped me to remain clean and sober."

The Get Him to the Greek star also reflected on what he has learnt about himself going sober: "What I have been taught and shown is that it is impossible for a person like me to not drink and use drugs, unless I have sufficient ongoing support from people that understand what it's like to feel that drugs or alcohol, or you know, certain behaviors, are necessary in order to feel okay."

He went on to say he was 'grateful' to lead a life without addiction, noting that he has been married twice and had two children since giving up drink and drugs.

He previously revealed that he was arrested twelve times for drug-related incidents and once confessed to introducing Kylie Minogue to his drug dealer.

Recently, Brand has come under criticism for spreading misinformation relating to Covid-19 and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

New Twitter owner Elon Musk defended Brand, commenting: "With so many mainstream media companies saying @rustyrockets is crazy/dangerous, I watched some of his videos. Ironically, he seemed more balanced & insightful than those condemning him! The groupthink among major media companies is more troubling. There should be more dissent."
