Moscow will need between five and seven years to rebuild its military capacity, depending on the outcome of the war in Ukraine, Czech President Petr Pavel said at a press conference on Nov. 22.

“Based on current estimates, it will take Russia at least 5-7 years to recover its combat readiness,” said Pavel.

“On the other hand, there are many conditions within these estimates that could change the situation. A lot will depend on what the outcome of the war will be, how Ukraine will emerge from it, and how Russia will.”

Pavel also added that all NATO member states perceive Russia as the number one threat to Europe, not just the Czech Republic. Hence, Pavel noted, there is a need for realistic preparations, and all European armies are getting ready for the possibility of "high-intensity conflict" on the continent, especially after the Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

"We in NATO take this situation seriously, although we certainly do not wish for it," he said.

He further stated that Russia must be held accountable for its crime of aggression against Ukraine, thus emphasizing the need to continue supporting the country.
