Russia demolishes unique modernist sanatorium in occupied Crimea
The sanatorium was located in the village of Kikineiz (Opolzneve), not far from the town of Simeiz. Architects Valeriy Zhylkin and Yevsiy Perchenkov were the building’s architects. The sanatorium was opened in 1986. The multi-faceted building was masterfully incorporated into the mountainous landscape of the Crimea’s southern coast.
Architect Oleksiy Bykov, one of the authors of a book about the phenomenon of Orthodox Chic church buildings, called the sanatorium building a “beautiful example of the metabolism in architecture.”
The Ukrainian Modernism community said in an Instagram post that after the illegal annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea, Russia grabbed all the property of the peninsula, including 200 sanatoriums, which were either sold off or transferred to law enforcement agencies.
Initially, the Zori Ukrainy sanatorium was named Zori Rossii, but later the complex of buildings was blown up to make way for a new construction.

“If any of you still have any illusions that Putin’s Russia has any piety about Soviet heritage, forget it,” the report says.
“They don’t know the concepts of culture and heritage, only money and war are valuable. Respect for heritage, art and history is what distinguishes a civilized person from a Russian invader.”
