Russia’s deployment of more than 100,000 troops in the Lyman-Kupyansk area is not a threat to the Ukrainian military, Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesperson for the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, told Radio Svoboda on July 18

“This problem is not new and the Ukraine Armed Forces have not given them any progress for many months, and have been hitting them hard,” Cherevatyi said.

“It wasn’t yesterday that 100,000 appeared. This number has existed for a long time, it can be a little more, a little less.”

Despite its size, the group is not well prepared and motivated, Cherevatyi stressed.

“Yes, it’s large and it’s necessary to take into account its size,” he said.

“However, this number is not an indicator of a threat or cause for fear.”

Commenting on data that suggest 900 Russian tanks have been brought to the Lyman-Kupyansk area, the officer said this is old Soviet equipment, while the latest models are less common on the battlefield.

The Ukrainian military reported on July 17 that the Russian invaders had deployed more than 100,000 personnel in the Lyman-Kupyansk area. Almost the same number of soldiers participated in the war in Afghanistan.

The frontline situation in eastern Ukraine continues to remain fraught as Russian forces launch an offensive near Kupyansk in Kharkiv Oblast, the Commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, Lt. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi said on July 17.
