With the approach of mid-March Russian presidential elections, Moscow has dispatched a substantial security force to occupied areas of Ukraine to maintain order, Zaporizhzhia regional governor Ivan Fedorov said in a Telegram post on Feb. 28.

According to Fedorov, the occupation regime has stepped up “filtration” measures around Melitopol, under the pretext of drug searches or checking weapon licenses.

In addition, more than 10,000 Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia) troops have been sent to occupied Ukrainian territories, where they will accompany the so-called "election officials" and carry out searches of residents' homes.

On Feb. 19, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence reported that the Kremlin had dispatched specially trained units to occupied areas of Ukraine to oversee the upcoming sham elections, scheduled for March 17.
