Russia’s Independence Day missile attack on southern Ukraine entirely ineffective

Ukrainians sleepy after Independence Day celebrations were awoken by air raid sirens in the early hours of Aug. 25 as explosions were heard across southern Ukraine after Russia attacked Ukraine with four missiles and an attack drone.

"All five targets were destroyed by the Ukrainian Air Force," the Ukrainian Air Force emphasized.

NV is following the aftermath of Russia's nighttime attack on southern Ukraine.

Russia launched air and sea missiles from the Black and Azov seas, confirmed Ukraine’s Air Force Command.

The following missiles were launched in the direction of the southern regions from Su-34 aircraft:

  • Two Kh-59 guided missiles from the Black Sea

  • Two Kalibr cruise missiles from a small missile ship in the Sea of Azov

One Shahed UAV was also launched from the area of Primorsko-Akhtarsk.

“The missiles were destroyed in Odesa Oblast, and the attack UAV was destroyed in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.”

Russia attacked the Chornomorsk area with two missiles, believed to be of the Kh-35/59 type. Both were destroyed according to Serhiy Bratchuk, head of the Public Council at the Odesa Oblast Military Administration.

A second attack on Odesa Oblast came later, at about 3:44 a.m., with Kalibr missiles.

Explosions were heard in Odesa just after 4 a.m., according to public broadcaster Suspilne.

An air raid alert was declared in the region. Ukraine’s Air Force command reported a missile threat in the region.

At 11:46 p.m., the Air Force reported that air defense systems were operating over Odesa.

Enemy tactical aircraft were active in the southern and southeastern directions according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

The Odesa Oblast State Administration urged residents to stay in shelters.

Explosions were heard in Zaporizhzhya, news outlet Hromadske reported.

Another blast was heard in the city of Kropyvnytskyi late on Aug. 24. Rescuers and police were working at the scene, said the head of the Kirovohrad Oblast State Administration Andriy Raykovych.
