The creators pointed out that the Russians are not just screening the Ukrainian cartoon hit — now the highest-grossing Ukrainian film of all-time, but also the popular Hollywood animated film ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’.

“Russia is stealing cartoons,” the message reads.

“A Russian cinema illegally posted on its website the announcement of the premiere of the Universal Pictures ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ and indicated that it would be shown before Mavka screenings. This is illegal, because it, like any other cinema in Russia, has no permission to show either Hollywood blockbusters or Ukrainian films.”

The Russians have developed a scheme to illegal screen the films, the message goes on.

“They sell tickets for one movie, but show another instead and call it 'pre-screening service'. But the announcements of our film's screenings are fake, because the terrorist state has no access to our cartoon, let alone the rights to distribute it. But there are no rules and laws for an uncivilized country. It steals from us and from Hollywood.”

"So Mavka has become part of a new scheme of shadow distribution in Russia," said the creators of Mavka.

Made by Ukraine’s Animigrad Studios and starring Ukrainian celebrities and singers, Mavka is a story based on famous Ukrainian poet Lesia Ukrainka’s work “The Forest Song.”

Previously, the Russians have stolen Ukrainian ideas for football logos and postage stamps.
