Russia continues to deploy significant combat aviation resources to support ground operations in Ukraine but without the desired results, Britain’s Defense Ministry said in its Aug. 7 update.

Since the beginning of summer, Russian combat aircraft have conduced more than 100 sorties per day, but due to the threat of Ukrainian air defenses, they are almost always limited to territory controlled by the occupiers.

“Russia is trying to solve this problem by increasingly using free-falling base bombs with extended-range warheads. Airplanes can drop them many kilometers from the target, but so far they do not show consistent accuracy," the report stated.

Since Ukraine’s counteroffensive started, Russian combat helicopters have shown their effectiveness, but in recent weeks, the Russian military has not been able to create effective tactical air power in the south.
