Up to 25 drones swarmed over Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Crimea in the early hours of July 30, in what looked to be one of the largest claimed attacks on the peninsula since Russia began its military occupation of the Ukrainian territory in 2014.

The press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense reported the attack on its channel on the Telegram messenger, claiming Ukraine was behind the attack, but that it had been “stopped.”

"Tonight, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack with twenty-five aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles on objects on the territory of the Crimean peninsula was stopped," the ministry’s post reads.

It gave no other evidence that the attack actually occurred, however.

The ministry claims that Russian air defenses in Crimea managed to shoot down 16 of the attacking drones, while the on other nine were allegedly brought down by means of radio-electronic warfare. They said none of the drones reached their targets, but fell into the waters of the Black Sea and Cape Tarkhankut. There were no injuries or damage.

Meanwhile, on the night of Sunday, July 30, Moscow was attacked by unknown drones. In particular, the IQ quarter tower in Moscow City in the west of the Russian capital, where the offices of several Russian ministries are located, was badly damaged.

Members of the public in Moscow found ministry documents scattered on the ground below the impact site.

The Russian authorities said three drones had attacked the Russian capital. One was shot down over the outskirts of the city, and the other two disabled and brought down by electronic warfare means, and crashing into the Moscow City district. One person was reported to have been injured.

There have been several drone attacks on Moscow, the one before occurring on July 24, when drones hit an office building and the building of the Central Military Orchestra of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The Russian authorities typically claim all attacking drones are either shot down or brought down by electronic warfare means.
