Among the ethnic minorities represented are Yakuts and Buryats from Eastern Siberia. Activists from these groups have expressed their desire for independence from Russia and see Ukraine’s victory as a significant step toward realizing that aspiration.

An unnamed representative of the Ukrainian army revealed that all 60 members of the Siberia Battalion are volunteers who were not recruited from among Russian prisoners of war.

The Ukrainian military is working to expedite the background check process, which usually takes up to a year, in an effort to encourage more Russians, especially those from ethnic minorities, to join their ranks.
