Russian occupiers in Kherson call for “immediate referendum, Ukraine is main topic at UNGA, and MSE drops more than 10%

The so-called “Public Council of Kherson Oblast” appealed to the “head of the region” with the initiative to immediately hold a referendum on “recognizing it as a subject” of the Russian Federation. This would represent the forcible conquest of the Kherson region by Russia, and, per President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s repeated statements, would close the door to any possibility of negotiations.
Meanwhile, Russian politician Dimitry Medvedev claims that any attacks on “annexed” Ukrainian territory would be seen as an attack on Russia itself. “Infringement upon Russian territory is a crime that merits deployment of all available means in response,” said Medvedev, though it’s unclear how “all available means” is defined.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the UN via video link, while his wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska, as well as Foreign Ministr Dmytro Kuleba and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, will all attend in person. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine’s key priorities for the near term include Strengthening the international coalition on the grain initiative, improving relations with the Global South, and bringing Russia to justice for its crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, men looking to leave the peninsula will require a permit from a military commissar, likely in line with its policy of stepping up mobilization efforts as its full-scale invasion of Ukraine encounters repeated defeats. Military exemptions for factory workers in occupied territory are also being cancelled.
Due to the fear of sham referendums and stepped-up mobilization efforts, Russian businesses fear even greater ostracization from global markets as a result of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s continued insistence on prosecuting his full-scale war against Ukraine. According to Russian newspaper Kommersant, Tinkoff Group (-9.68), NOVATEK (-9.63%), Polymetal (-9.82%), and Lukoil (-9.03%) were among the companies that saw the sharpest decline in their share prices.
Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov revealed this in a post on his Telegram channel, saying that “Every executioner, murderer and rapist will face severe punishment. Revenge is inevitable!”
According to the Khmarochos media outlet, the Glovo service simply ran out of couriers, as Ukrainians, deprived of the famous U.S. fast food chain for months, swamped it with orders. The Glovo app stopped displaying the restaurant’s menu due to high demand. There were also difficulties with other restaurant orders. McDonald’s restaurants around the country are scheduled to reopen gradually, over the next few months.
“All concentrates have subsequently been exhausted in Russia and production has ended,” a PepsiCo spokesperson said on Sept. 8, the first public comments on the matter since the company announced in early March it was suspending production, sales, promotional activities and advertising in Russia. PepsiCo is one of the oldest foreign companies operating in Russia, having established trade relations with the USSR in the 1970s.
