A former Russian officer of the GRU, Russian military intelligence, Igor Salikov, has fled to the Netherlands and surrendered to the International Criminal Court, Salikov revealed during an interview on Dutch television on Dec. 18.

Salikov has also been cooperating with Ukrainian investigations into Russian war crimes for the past six months, revealed the Ukrainian head of the war crimes department of the Prosecutor-General Office, Yuriy Belousov, during an interview with Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty on Dec. 19.

The Russian officer has provided testimony about Russia's actions since 2013, including its preparations for the full-scale invasion.

“He provided quite important testimonies, some of which have already been confirmed,” Blouson said.

“These are related to the invasion of Feb. 24. 2022. He [Salikov] reported certain war crimes — some of which we are investigating and some of which have already been confirmed.”

Belousov added that it is difficult to comment on all the information provided by Salikov, as some of his claims still require verification by the investigation. He did not provide the details of Ukraine’s initial contacts with the former GRU officer.

Salikov, 60, claims to also have been a senior instructor of the so-called Wagner PMC, and the “ex-colonel and head of special operations unit" of the Donetsk puppet authority.

He has stated that he had been participating in the invasion of Ukraine since 2014 and commanded a militant group whose aim was to protect Donetsk puppet head Alexander Borodai, “who got personal orders from [Kremlin puppet authority architect Vladislav] Surkov.”
